Things to Do Alone in Phoenix

Phoenix, Arizona is two cities for a person on their own: a string of museums along Central Avenue, and desert parks that sit inside the city limits. November is when both work. Museum days are easy to plan, and the trails and gardens are open for long hours.

The Central Avenue museum spine

Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N. Central Avenue. Its hours: Monday and Tuesday closed, Wednesday 10 am to 8 pm, Thursday 10 am to 5 pm, Friday 10 am to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm. Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesday runs 3 to 8 pm, and First Fridays run 5 to 8 pm. Adults pay $23 otherwise. The museum is closed on New Year's Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas (Phoenix Art Museum). It is a good first stop alone, because a Wednesday evening ticket sets its own price. Its directions page names the light rail station at Central Avenue and McDowell Road, about a quarter mile south of the main entrance (directions). Plan the ride on valleymetro.org. For a pace, read how to visit a museum alone.

Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Avenue. Between 1 September and 31 May it is open Monday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It closes on Easter Sunday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day (Heard Museum). Both museums are on North Central Avenue, so they pair well across two days.

Arizona Science Center downtown is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed on Mondays. It lists Monday 28 December as an open Monday for winter break (Arizona Science Center).

Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard, is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Thanksgiving and open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas Day. General admission is $24, and parking is free (MIM). A museum where you listen in headphones suits a solo visit.

A garden that stays open at night

Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, lists hours of 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. from 1 October to 31 December. It is closed on 26 November (Thanksgiving) and 25 December. Parking is free on site (Desert Botanical Garden). The page also notes occasional early closures for private events, so check the day you plan to go.

Trails inside the city

Downtown on a First Friday

Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix is an arts district known for murals, galleries and boutiques. Its site describes a monthly First Friday Art Walk with the First Friday A.R.T.S. Market (Roosevelt Row). The walk and market run monthly on the first Friday of each month, so check the Roosevelt Row site for the current month. Walking a mural block alone is easy, because you set the pace and stop where you want.

Getting started alone

  1. Choose one museum and one time slot, such as Wednesday at 3 pm.
  2. Eat early or late, and look at the menu before you go in. See how to eat alone in public.
  3. Use park hours as your plan: the city lists trailhead and trail times, so you can finish before they close.
