Things to Do Alone in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is a city of hills, and that shapes how you do it alone: you climb to a view, then come back down into somewhere warm. An incline runs late into the night, the city has hundreds of public stairways, and November is when the Frick and the university's Nationality Rooms put up holiday decorations. This page goes up first, then indoors.

Go up: the incline and the stairs

The Duquesne Incline says it is open every day of the year from 6:30 am to 12:30 am. There are no reservations or advance tickets, and the site says cash fares and Port Authority ConnectCards are accepted, so bring one or the other. A ride up to Mount Washington is a short, self-contained outing, and a late closing means you can go after dark.

Visit Pittsburgh describes the view from Mount Washington as "one of the Top 10 most beautiful views in the country" (a quote it attributes to USA Weekend) and pairs it with Emerald View Park, 257 acres of green space. It adds that Pittsburgh has more than 700 outdoor stairways within city limits, with more than 24,000 vertical feet of climbing if you did them all. Pick one flight and walk it; there is no need to do more.

Come down: the Strip District and Market Square

The same tourism page calls the Strip District "a vibrant, walkable neighborhood full of international food, fresh markets, local beverages and tons of shopping," and says it is free to browse any time of year. Downtown, there is no cost to walk around Market Square and PPG Place; Visit Pittsburgh says to expect ice skaters and holiday lights in winter. Browsing a street of shops is an easy way to be around people with no obligation to talk to them.

Galleries for a cold day

Mattress Factory is at 509 Jacksonia Street on the North Side. Its site lists Wednesday 11 am to 8 pm and Thursday to Sunday 11 am to 6 pm, and closed Tuesday. Adult admission is $22 per its site. Wednesday evenings keep the museum open longer than usual.

Play: a board-game cafe

Dragon's Roast Cafe at 398 Perry Highway calls itself Pittsburgh's first board gaming cafe. It has a library of over 1,000 board games and charges $5 per person to use it or reserve a table. Cafe hours are Monday to Saturday 7 am to 9 pm and Sunday 8 am to 2 pm. The cafe's calendar lists game nights and weekly play sessions; check which ones are open to newcomers before you go, and arrive early to ask to join a table.

Another way to spend an evening alone is a film. Row House Cinema is at 4115 Butler Street in Lawrenceville, and its homepage lists the day's showings.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: the incline to Mount Washington in the evening, then straight back down.
  2. Medium: a Warhol gallery talk on a Wednesday, or the Nationality Rooms on a Saturday or Sunday self-guided visit.
  3. Bolder: go to Dragon's Roast Cafe on a game night, tell the host it is your first visit, and ask to be dealt into a table.
