Things to Do Alone in Portland

This guide is about Portland, Oregon, not Portland, Maine. In early November the city's best solo plans are gardens, covered markets and a hill walk: the gardens are quiet, entry is timed or simple, and nobody expects company at a food-cart window. The sections below follow one route from the Old Town garden to the West Hills, then to the east side for evenings.

Gardens first: three you can reach without a car

Lan Su Chinese Garden sits in Old Town and is open daily from 10:00 to 16:30. Its Chrysanthemum Festival runs 5 to 22 November 2026, with 81 chrysanthemum varieties and a floral sculpture display. The garden also has the Yun Shui Teahouse and garden tea tastings, which gives a table-for-one a clear purpose (Lan Su, festival page).

Portland Japanese Garden is in Washington Park. The hours page lists opening times week by week (the days and hours vary, so check the week you plan to go), and tickets can be booked up to 10 days ahead, which means you can choose a quiet slot. It is closed on 26 November and 25 December (hours). TriMet bus 63 runs between Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Rose Test Garden and Japanese Garden, leaving the gardens on the hour from 10am to 6pm. You can also take MAX Red or Blue line to Washington Park and ride the free Explore Washington Park shuttle, which runs 10am to 4pm daily in winter (getting here).

Washington Park is the third option. The City of Portland describes it as a 410-acre park that holds the Oregon Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, the International Rose Test Garden and the Japanese Garden. Parking is pay-to-park and very limited, so skip the car (Portland Parks).

The Saturday loop

On Saturdays the city has two markets, and you can do one or both.

Climb: Forest Park to Pittock Mansion

Pittock Mansion is a historic house on a hill above the city. From September to March it is open 9am to 4pm, with a noon opening on Tuesdays, and last admission is 30 minutes before closing. It is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth and during January maintenance days. Its visit page also gives instructions for hikers arriving on foot (Pittock Mansion).

Forest Park has more than 80 miles of trails and more than 40 access points, and the Wildwood and Pittock Mansion trailhead is one of the listed starting points. The city's advice: be aware of your surroundings, and know that wind, rain and high water can leave trails with downed trees, landslides and flooding (Portland Parks: Forest Park). In November, pick a short section, check trail closures first, and treat the mansion as a destination with a roof.

Evenings on the east side

Cartopia is a food-cart pod and beer garden on SE Hawthorne Boulevard, described on its site as Portland's original, since 2008. Carts listed include Burger Ritual, El Brasero (Mexican), Potato Champion (fries and poutine), Pyro Pizza and BKK Pad Thai (Cartopia). Ordering at a window and eating wherever there is room avoids the table-for-one moment. Check the carts' hours before you go.

Laurelhurst Theater has been a Portland cinema since 1923 and now has four auditoriums. Beer, wine, pizza, salads and popcorn can be taken into the auditorium, shows are 21 and over with valid ID, and the box office opens 30 minutes before the first screening (about, FAQ). For a quieter, older room, the Academy Theater in Montavilla opened in 1948 and was restored in 2006 (Academy Theater). See going to the cinema alone for how to pick a seat.

Rooms for a wet day

Water and a view

The Eastbank Esplanade is a 1.5-mile path along the river from the Hawthorne Bridge to the Steel Bridge, with links across the water to Waterfront Park (Portland Parks). The Portland Aerial Tram connects South Waterfront with Marquam Hill: weekdays 5:30am to 9:30pm, Saturdays 9am to 5pm, closed on Sundays and holidays (Portland Aerial Tram).

Getting around

TriMet says you pay by tapping a phone or contactless card on the green Hop reader when you board (TriMet fares). The central city is also served by the Portland Streetcar. For a general plan, see things to do alone in a new city and how to eat alone in public.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: On the first Thursday of the month, spend an hour in the Portland Art Museum, or sit in the Central Library on a Tuesday evening before it closes at 8pm.
  2. Medium: Take bus 63 to the Japanese Garden, book a quiet slot, and walk the garden without a phone.
  3. Bolder: Walk up from the Forest Park trailhead to Pittock Mansion, then end the day with a cart dinner at Cartopia.
