Vancouver is a city of edges: water on one side, a park on another, a harbour you can cross by public ferry. For a first outing alone, the easiest plan is to cross the water, sit down somewhere, and come back. The rest of the week can be built from there.
Cross the inlet
The SeaBus is a passenger ferry across Burrard Inlet between downtown Vancouver and North Vancouver. TransLink says the crossing takes 12 minutes, each boat seats up to 395 passengers, and in the day it departs every 15 minutes. It runs seven days a week. From Waterfront the first sailing is at 6:01 a.m. on weekdays and the last at 1:22 a.m., while on Sundays and holidays it runs from 8:16 a.m. to 11:22 p.m. (SeaBus schedules).
A boat that lands somewhere with food is a short, bounded trip, which is the whole idea of a good first outing alone: go out, sit down, come back.
Lunch where the boat lands
Lonsdale Quay Market (123 Carrie Cates Court, North Vancouver) is open seven days a week. The Level 1 market runs 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Level 1 food hall 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and the second level 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Lonsdale Quay). A food hall suits one person: you order, carry your tray, and nobody needs a table for two. Our guide to eating alone in public has the small tricks.
Granville Island: the public market
The Granville Island site lists the Public Market as open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Net Loft from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Granville Island). A market is an easy place to be alone: walk the stalls once, then choose one counter to eat at. Our guide to eating alone in public has the small tricks.
Art that stays open late
Two institutions hold a late night each week, and both give you a reason to go after work or after dark.
- Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby Street): open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Friday, when it stays open until 8 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays. Admission is free on the first Friday of every month from 4 to 8 p.m. during Free First Friday Nights, and the gallery asks you to reserve a spot in advance to guarantee entry (Vancouver Art Gallery). Our museum guide covers how to take your time.
- Museum of Anthropology at UBC: open Tuesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Thursdays until 9 p.m. Admission is half price on Thursday after 5 p.m. and the museum is closed on Mondays from October 15 to May 15. (Museum of Anthropology).
Stanley Park, with company if you want it
Destination Vancouver describes Stanley Park as having forest trails, beaches, a heated outdoor pool, an aquarium and a seawall that you can walk, jog, bike or skate (Destination Vancouver). The seawall is a path with no wrong turn, which makes it good for a first outdoor outing alone.
If you would like a group with a plan, Stanley Park Ecology lists walks and workshops with set dates and start points on its events page (Stanley Park Ecology events). Check the event page for how to join.
A seat in the dark
When the weather turns, the VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour Street) shows films from its Now Playing and Calendar pages, and its box office helpline is open Monday to Friday, 12 to 5 p.m. (VIFF, plan your visit). Cinema is the easiest form of company: you sit with strangers and nobody expects a word. See our cinema guide.
Getting around
TransLink says Compass Cards are reloadable fare cards that work across Metro Vancouver and can hold Stored Value or prepaid passes (TransLink). One card covers the SeaBus and the rest of the system.
First solo outings
- Easy: the SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay at a quiet hour, a coffee or a food hall bite, and the boat back.
- Medium: a Friday evening at the Vancouver Art Gallery or a Thursday evening at the Museum of Anthropology.
- Bold: a Stanley Park Ecology walk or workshop on your own, picked from its events page.
