Virginia Beach in November is a quieter town, and that suits a solo visitor: the best stops are indoor halls, free historic houses, a lighthouse and a wildlife refuge rather than summer beach scenes. This guide covers nine places in Virginia Beach that are open now, with Norfolk as a separate day trip.
All hours below were checked on 2026-11-01 against the venue page linked in each entry.
Indoors when the wind picks up
Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. At 717 General Booth Boulevard, open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The aquarium also runs whale-watching boat tours in winter, looking for humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins as well as seabirds. Adult tickets are $39 (ages 12 and up) and $34 for ages 0 to 11, and the aquarium says it takes part in Whale SENSE, a NOAA-backed responsible whale-watching programme. Harbor seals, the aquarium notes, are frequent visitors to the area in winter. Sightings are not guaranteed, tours depend on the weather and schedules can change, so check its boat tours page for the season. A boat is a good solo format: everyone looks the same way (Virginia Aquarium, boat tours).
Military Aviation Museum. At 1341 Princess Anne Road, open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Adult admission is $17, seniors, military and teachers $15, and youth aged 5 to 13 $10 (Military Aviation Museum). It is a place to wander at your own speed; for general tips, see how to visit a museum alone.
Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (Virginia MOCA). At 5811 Wesleyan Drive, open Wednesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Monday and Tuesday. Visitors should arrive at least 45 minutes before the galleries close. Admission is free for Virginia residents; non-residents pay $16.50, and adults 65 and over, students, teachers, active military and first responders pay $11 with ID. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving Day, 26 November 2026. It also offers a free digital guide to the art on view, which suits a visit on your own (Virginia MOCA: visit).
Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library. At 4100 Virginia Beach Boulevard, open Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Sunday hours run from the Sunday after Labor Day to the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend). A reading hour here is a low-pressure start (Virginia Beach Public Library: locations and hours).
History, houses and open water
Francis Land House. Part of the city's Virginia Beach History Museums, it offers free tours every hour during open hours: Thursday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on City of Virginia Beach holidays. The museums describe exhibits on the house's 20th-century history, including Prohibition and World War II, plus augmented-reality interactives in the house and grounds (Virginia Beach History Museums).
Thoroughgood House. Run by the same history museums, with free tours every 45 minutes during open hours: Thursday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on City of Virginia Beach holidays (Virginia Beach History Museums). Fixed tour times make it an easy way to join a small group without having to start a conversation. The Lynnhaven House, another of the history museums, is closed for restoration, with free preservation tours at noon on the third Thursday of each month (no tour if that Thursday is a city holiday).
Cape Henry Lighthouse. Preservation Virginia describes it as the first federally funded public works project of the new United States, completed in 1792. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Thanksgiving Day, December 24 and 25, and December 28 to January 1. It stands inside Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story, so visits depend on timed tickets (advance reservations are strongly recommended). Visitors 18 or older must submit a base security form after buying a ticket, and visitors over 16 must show a valid REAL ID. Climbers must be at least 42 inches tall (Preservation Virginia: Cape Henry Lighthouse).
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge grounds are open from sunrise to sunset. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says entrance fees apply from April 1 to October 31, and that the East and West Dike Trails are closed from November 1 to March 31 to protect wintering ducks, geese and swans. The Raptor Trail, 0.4 mile one way behind the Visitor Center, goes through bald cypress, freshwater marsh and a small pond. The Visitor Center is open on Thursdays and Fridays and select Saturdays outside summer, and the refuge advises warm layers in winter (Back Bay NWR: visit us).
Virginia Beach Farmers Market. At 3640 Dam Neck Road, the city says the market is open year-round with agriculture-inspired shops and related businesses. Individual merchants set their own hours, so check the market's page before you go (Virginia Beach Farmers Market).
Planning the days
Three of the stops need some planning in November. Cape Henry Lighthouse needs a timed ticket and a valid REAL ID, the Back Bay visitor center keeps limited days, and the whale-watching tours are weather-dependent. The historic houses and Virginia MOCA are closed on some weekdays, so line them up for Thursday to Sunday. The Aquarium, the Military Aviation Museum and the Central Library keep longer daily hours, which makes them good fallback days. If you only have one day, book the lighthouse slot first and fit the aviation museum around it.
A day trip to Norfolk
Norfolk is a separate city across the water, not part of Virginia Beach, and it fits a second day. Check Hampton Roads Transit for routes before you plan around a bus (Hampton Roads Transit).
Chrysler Museum of Art. Free admission, with a free glassmaking demonstration Tuesday to Sunday at noon at the Perry Glass Studio. It is open Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. (Chrysler Museum).
MacArthur Memorial. At 198 Bank Street, open Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (MacArthur Memorial).
Norfolk Botanical Garden. On the day it was checked, the Garden was open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Perry Conservatory 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the conservatory is closed on Tuesdays for plant care (Norfolk Botanical Garden).
Virginia Zoo. Open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Virginia Zoo).

FAQ
Is Virginia Beach worth visiting in November?
The aquarium, the aviation museum, Virginia MOCA, the historic houses and the lighthouse are open in November with their regular hours, and the wildlife refuge has trails open through the winter, although the dike trails are closed.
Do I need a ticket for Cape Henry Lighthouse?
Preservation Virginia says visits are limited by a timed ticketing schedule and strongly recommends booking in advance. It is on a military base, so visitors over 16 must present a valid REAL ID, and visitors 18 or older must complete a base security form after buying a ticket.
Are the Back Bay dike trails open in winter?
No. The refuge closes both the East and West Dike Trails from November 1 to March 31. The Raptor Trail behind the Visitor Center stays available.
Is Virginia MOCA free?
Admission is free for Virginia residents and for children under 12. Non-residents pay $16.50, and the museum is closed Monday and Tuesday.
Is the Chrysler Museum free?
The museum lists free admission. It is in Norfolk, not Virginia Beach.
Does the Virginia Aquarium run whale watching?
Yes, as winter boat tours for humpback whales and dolphins. Sightings are not guaranteed and tours are weather-dependent.
