London is a good city to try being alone because so much of its best culture is free. If a gallery costs nothing, you can walk in, leave after twenty minutes and lose nothing, which takes most of the pressure out of going solo. This page sorts London by effort: walk in, book a slot, or take a half-day escape, then adds a late-Friday-and-Saturday evening.
Walk in, no plan needed
- Tate Modern (Bankside): free admission. Sunday to Thursday 10:00-18:00, Friday and Saturday 10:00-21:00 (Tate Modern).
- National Gallery (Trafalgar Square): free, donations welcome. Daily 10:00-18:00, Friday until 21:00. Guided tours are listed Tuesday to Thursday (National Gallery).
- Sir John Soane's Museum (Holborn): free entry, Wednesday to Sunday 10:00-17:00, last admission about 16:30, closed Monday and Tuesday, no pre-booking needed. Free Private Apartments tours run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with a maximum of eight people (Soane). A small group of eight is a friendly way to join strangers without needing to talk.
- Wallace Collection (Marylebone): permanent collection free, open daily 10:00-17:00. Seasonal late opening is possible, so check (Wallace Collection).
- Wellcome Collection (Euston): galleries, library and café 10:00-18:00. Exhibitions are free (checked 2026-10-21) (Wellcome).
- Southbank Centre: free foyers where you can sit, read or watch people. Some foyers are ticketed at times, so check the visit page (Southbank Centre).
- Borough Market (Southwark): standing food stalls make an easy solo lunch. The page showed Monday closed, so check opening days before you go (Borough Market).
The Barbican lists "free things to do" on its site, see its site for what is currently open (Barbican).
Book a slot
- Sky Garden (City): free tickets exist and are booked via the site. A morning ticket for 8-9am is 11.50 GBP and includes a hot drink and pastry. Booking a restaurant also grants access (Sky Garden). One ticket for one person is the easiest thing to book.
- Hunterian Museum (Holborn): free entry, booking recommended, Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-17:00 (Hunterian).
- The Postal Museum and Mail Rail (Mount Pleasant): Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-17:00, last Mail Rail ride 16:00. A single seat on the ride works alone. See the site for prices (Postal Museum).
Half-day escape: heath and parks
- Kenwood House: the house is open daily 10:00-17:00, last entry 16:30. Free versus member pricing: see the page (English Heritage). Pair it with a walk on Hampstead Heath (City of London).
- Richmond Park (Royal Parks) and Greenwich Park (Royal Parks) are named as royal parks for long solo walks, with deer in Richmond and hill views in Greenwich. I did not verify their hours or access.
A walk is the simplest solo activity there is; the new-city guide has more of that mindset.
Friday and Saturday late
Tate Modern stays open until 21:00 on Friday and Saturday, and the National Gallery until 21:00 on Friday. A late visit feels like an evening out without needing a table for one. For dinner alone, the restaurant page helps.
