Things to Do Alone in Vienna

Vienna is one of the easiest cities to be alone in, because its coffee houses are built for exactly that: you order one coffee, take a table and stay as long as you like. Add standing-room opera tickets that cost at most 18 EUR, several museums that open late on set evenings, and walkable districts, and a solo day here needs no company at all.

Step 1: the coffee-house ladder

A Viennese coffee house is a place to read, write or watch people. Nobody expects a second order or a quick exit. Start at the easy end and move up when you feel ready.

Easy: Café Sperl. On Gumpendorfer Strasse in Mariahilf, with an original interior, marble tables, Thonet chairs and billiard tables. It is a classic spot to sit with a newspaper. Hours: Mon-Sat 07:00-22:00, Sun 10:00-20:00 (Café Sperl).

Medium: Café Landtmann. A coffee house since 1873, opposite City Hall at Universitätsring 4. It opens daily from 07:30; see the official page for closing time (Café Landtmann).

Bold: Café Hawelka. An old-school artist café at Dorotheergasse 6. According to its contact page it is open Mon-Thu 09:00-00:00, Fri-Sat 09:00-01:00 and Sun 09:00-22:00, but older pages differ on Sunday, so confirm (Café Hawelka).

Not right now: Café Central. It has been closed since 16 March 2026 for renovation, with reopening announced for winter 2026. In the meantime the official site lists a temporary "DECENTRAL" at Freyung 3/1, daily 07:30-22:00 (Café Central). Re-check before planning around either.

Step 2: opera for the price of lunch

The Vienna State Opera sells standing places for at most 18 EUR (ticket info). You stand or lean at your own spot, and there is a subtitle screen. It suits solo visitors, because a standing spot does not depend on whether anyone sits next to you. Standing tickets are sold at the standing-room box office from 80 minutes before the performance, and a day-of online sale starting at 10:00 is also described, so confirm the exact timing (first-time opera guide). Cheaper rates exist with a Bundestheater card or under 27.

If a good evening is not on the programme that day, a second choice is Haus der Musik, an interactive sound museum on Seilerstätte 30, open daily 10:00-22:00 (Haus der Musik).

Step 3: late museum nights

A recurring pattern in Vienna: one evening a week, big museums stay open late, which makes a relaxed solo visit after work.

For how to actually enjoy a museum alone, see museums alone. Here the Vienna advantage is simply the late hours.

Step 4: two historic cinemas

If you want an evening in the dark, two houses stand out: the single-screen Gartenbaukino on the Ring, a historic cinema since 1960 (programme), and the arthouse Votiv Kino with its café in Alsergrund (programme). Check programme and prices on their sites. More on the habit in cinema alone.

Three neighbourhoods to wander

The Naschmarkt is worth a stroll too, though I have no verified hours for it. Schönbrunn Gardens are listed daily 06:30-19:00, seasonally (Schönbrunn).

A one-day solo itinerary (pick a Thursday)

  1. Morning: coffee and a newspaper at Café Sperl (from 07:00 Mon-Sat).
  2. Late morning: the Prunksaal, open Thursday 09:00-21:00.
  3. Lunch: Café Landtmann, or a stroll around Innere Stadt.
  4. Afternoon: Kunsthistorisches Museum, open until 21:00 on Thursdays.
  5. Evening: if there is a performance, queue for a standing ticket at the State Opera from 80 minutes before. Otherwise, Haus der Musik or a film at Gartenbaukino.

If you feel awkward on the first coffee, that is normal. Our guide to doing things alone in a new city and the solo restaurant page cover the first-time nerves. For trip planning see the solo travel guide and solo activities guide. Other cities: Amsterdam, London, Paris, Copenhagen.

Details change, so check the venue before you go.

FAQ

Is Vienna good for solo travellers?

Yes. Coffee houses are built for sitting alone, standing-room opera needs no companion, and the main sights sit in walkable districts.

Can I go to a Viennese coffee house alone?

Yes, and it is the most natural thing to do. Order one coffee and stay; the tradition does not push you to leave. Café Sperl is a gentle first choice.

How cheap can I see the opera alone?

Standing tickets at the Vienna State Opera cost at most 18 EUR, with lower rates for a Bundestheater card or under 27. Check the sale timing on the official page.

Which day is best for museums?

Thursday is strongest: Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Prunksaal both stay open until 21:00. Wednesday and Friday evenings work for the Albertina.

Is Café Central open?

Not at the moment. The official site says it closed on 16 March 2026 for renovation and plans to reopen in winter 2026. Check before you go.
