What's your comfort zone level?

Tap an answer for ten everyday situations you might do alone. You get your level from 1 to 5, where you already feel at ease, and three first steps that fit.

Question 1 of 10

Order a coffee and drink it in the café, alone.

or describe it in your own words

    How the quiz works

The ten situations run from easy to big: a coffee sitting in, a film on your own, dinner at a table for one, a night away. Your level is the first one where your answers turn from "I would do it" to "I would skip it". That edge is where a small stretch does the most good, because it feels uncomfortable but still possible.

The bars show which kinds of situations already feel easy, from your own answers. People are rarely the same level everywhere: plenty find a museum easy and a restaurant hard. Starting in the category that already feels easiest is usually the gentlest way in.

    The five levels

    1. Level 1: ten minutes, and nobody is looking. A coffee sitting in, a walk without your phone.
    2. Level 2: visibly alone, briefly. A matinee, lunch at a counter, a short museum visit.
    3. Level 3: visibly alone, for a while. Dinner for one, a gig, a theatre seat of your own.
    4. Level 4: somewhere new, and you have to speak. A beginner class where you know nobody, a night away.
    5. Level 5: several days, and your own logistics. A week abroad, a multi-day route.

Each level is explained with examples on comfort zone challenges, sorted by level.

What to do with your result

Pick one of the three first steps and give it a day and a time this week. Before you go, write down how nervous you feel from 1 to 10; afterwards, write the number again. Repeating the same level a few times until the number drops is not standing still: it is how the next level starts to look possible.

    Questions about the quiz

    What is a comfort zone?

It is the set of things you can do without much nerve. Doing things alone shrinks or stretches it depending on practice, which is why the same situation can feel easy for one person and big for another.

    Is a low level bad?

No. It only tells you where to start. Level 1 steps are small on purpose, and they count.

How do I move up a level?

Repeat steps at your level until they feel ordinary, then try one from the next level. One step a week is a pace that is easy to keep.

How often should I retake the quiz?

After a few weeks of steps. Your answers, and so your level, should shift as things you once avoided become routine.

    Is this a personality test?

No. It is a quick self-check about doing things on your own, not a diagnosis of anything.
