How it works

Each of the ten settings has its own set of lines at three comfort levels. Level 1 is a comment about what you both can see, so nobody has to answer. Level 2 is a light question that takes one sentence to answer. Level 3 adds your name and a little curiosity about them. You get three openers, so you can pick the one that sounds like you, two follow-ups for when they reply, and one exit so you can finish on your own terms. Tap Three more for a fresh set.

Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere. The lines are written for this page and run in your browser.

How to use the lines

What makes a good opener

A good opener is about something you both can see or share: the room, the queue, the class, the dog. It asks for little, it is easy to answer, and it is easy to drop. The opener is not meant to impress. Its job is to open a door a few centimetres, so the other person can decide whether to walk through.

Questions about conversation starters

What is a good conversation starter?

A comment or a light question about something you both can see or share, like the room, the queue, the class or the dog. It should take one sentence to say and one sentence to answer.

How do I start a conversation with a stranger?

Pick a setting, say a simple line about what is around you, and then listen. If they respond, ask one follow-up. If they do not, smile and carry on with your day. You only need the first sentence to count as having tried.

What if they only give one-word answers?

Take it as a polite signal that they would rather not chat. Say "Enjoy it" or "Take care", smile and go. Nothing went wrong: you started a conversation, and that is the skill you are practising.

What should I say to end a conversation?

Say something warm and specific, then give your reason: "It was good talking to you, I am going to grab a seat." Every setting here has an exit written for it so you do not have to improvise one.

What do the three comfort levels mean?

Level 1 is a comment, no question needed. Level 2 is a light question. Level 3 is an introduction with a bit more curiosity. Start where you feel steady, and move up when it feels a little easier.

Is my data stored or sent anywhere?

No. The generator runs in your browser. Nothing you choose is stored, no cookies or local storage are used, and nothing is sent over the network.
