Things to Do Alone in Zurich

The best way to do Zurich alone is to organise your day around water: a morning at the Limmat or the lake, a midday museum, and an evening back by the water. The city is compact, the lake and river are public, and nobody looks twice at one person on a bench or a boat.

Last checked 2026-10-21. Where an official page gives no clear hour or price, we name the place and leave the number out.

Morning: start at the water

Zurich is at its calmest early, and water gives your morning a purpose so you are never just standing around.

Flussbad Unterer Letten. This is a river bath on the Limmat near Zurich West. You drift down a swim channel, and there are changing rooms and a kiosk. The current is strong and it is not for children, so treat it as one for confident swimmers. Zurich Tourism lists entry as free, and the 2026 season ran from 9 May to 20 September, so it is a warm-season swim, not an October one; check the page for the 2027 dates (Zurich Tourism, checked 2026-10-21).

The lake Badis. Zurich's lakeside bathing spots are a classic solo ritual: a towel, a book, a swim. They are seasonal, running roughly from spring to mid-September, and the City of Zurich publishes each season's dates and entry prices on its sports pages, so look those up before you go.

Chinagarten. If the weather is wrong for swimming, walk to the Chinagarten at the Zurichhorn. It is a calm garden with a pond and pavilions, a gift from Kunming. See the Zurich Tourism page for current entry and hours (Zurich Tourism).

Botanical Garden UZH. In Riesbach, with benches and no ticket logic to decide. Its site has an opening-hours section; read it on the day (Botanical Garden).

Pick one museum and give it unhurried time. Zurich rewards that.

For general tips on museums, cinemas and restaurants alone, see how to visit a museum alone, going to the cinema alone and eating alone. Two Zurich names for those pages: Kino Riffraff, an arthouse cinema with a bar in Zurich West (Riffraff), and Hiltl, a buffet-style vegetarian restaurant on Sihlstrasse that is easy to do solo (Hiltl).

For lunch, the Markthalle im Viadukt is a market hall with restaurants under the railway arches, and the counter-style eating suits one person well (Markthalle im Viadukt).

Evening: back to the lake

Lake Zurich boat trips. ZSG boats leave from Buerkliplatz, and the timetable lists both round trips and one-way trips (ZSG). A one-way sail with a walk back is a low-pressure way to see the lake. Prices are not confirmed here.

Lindenhof. A hilltop square above the Limmat in the old town. It is a good place to sit at sunset with nothing to do. (Zurich Tourism).

Grossmuenster. A church in the Altstadt that is free to enter. Opening times are on its website but we did not confirm them (Grossmuenster).

When it rains

Zoo Zurich on the Zuerichberg is open every day of the year. March to October it is open 9 to 18 (Masoala hall 10 to 18); November to February 9 to 17 (Masoala 10 to 17); it closes at 16:00 on 24 December (Zoo Zurich). Prices are not confirmed. Animals give you something to look at, which makes it an easy first solo outing.

Three areas to wander

  1. Altstadt and Lindenhof. Old streets, the Grossmuenster and a hilltop view. Walk up, sit down, walk back along the Limmat.
  2. Zurich West and the Viadukt arches. Galleries, a market hall, the Migros Museum, the Kunsthalle and the Flussbad nearby. This is the area to spend half a day without a plan.
  3. Seefeld and Zurichhorn. Lakeside walking, the Chinagarten and the botanical garden within reach.

A one-day solo itinerary

  1. Morning. Walk the Limmat to the Flussbad Unterer Letten if it is the right season, or to the Chinagarten if not.
  2. Late morning. Migros Museum in Zurich West, free to enter.
  3. Lunch. Markthalle im Viadukt, at a counter.
  4. Afternoon. Kunsthaus Zurich, or the Landesmuseum if you are near the station.
  5. Early evening. Climb to the Lindenhof.
  6. Evening. A ZSG boat from Buerkliplatz, or a quiet seat by the lake.

If a full day feels like a lot, take just one block. A single walk and a coffee still counts. If you want a gentle structure, the Solo Era iPhone app has a mission worded "Order a coffee and drink it in the cafe, alone." Solo Era is free to download, and a subscription is required to start missions.

Details change. Check the venue before you go.

FAQ

Is Zurich a good city to visit alone?

Yes. It is compact, the lake and river are public, and many of the best things, such as swimming spots, gardens and a hilltop square, are things people do on their own.

What can I do alone in Zurich on a rainy day?

Pick one gallery such as the Kunsthaus or the Migros Museum, eat at the Markthalle im Viadukt, or visit the zoo, which is open every day of the year.

Is there anything free to do alone in Zurich?

The Migros Museum has had free admission since 2023, the Grossmuenster is free to enter, and the Flussbad Unterer Letten is listed as free by Zurich Tourism. Confirm each before you go.

Is the Limmat swim safe for one person?

The Flussbad has a strong current and is not for children, so it suits confident swimmers. Read the rules on site and do not swim alone if you are unsure.

How many days do I need?

One day covers the water, one gallery and the old town. A second day lets you add Zurich West, the Zoo or a lake boat trip.
