Basel is a museum city on a river, and it suits being alone: the core is small and walkable, many museums stay open late on certain evenings, and several have free windows. In summer the Rhine adds a ritual of its own, and in winter the late openings carry the city.
Checked 2026-10-21. Hours and prices below come from the venues' own sites unless noted.

Evening is when a museum feels least crowded, and nobody questions a person on their own.
- Museum Tinguely, on the Rhine bank: Tuesday to Sunday 11 to 18, Thursday until 21, Monday closed. Adults CHF 18, students CHF 12. Kinetic art you can trigger is a good pressure-free solo wander (Museum Tinguely).

The Rhine ritual (summer only)
Basel people swim down the Rhine with a Wickelfisch, a dry bag that holds your clothes. Rules from the tourist office listing: swim only when the water is above 18 C and the river level is within official limits, strong swimmers only, never jump from bridges, and the bag is not a life aid. The bag can be rented from Basel Tourist Information from June to September for CHF 10 per day plus a CHF 30 deposit, or bought at several shops. This is seasonal, not October to April. These details match the basel.com page (basel.com, checked 2026-10-21). Only size L is offered for rent, there are no reservations and stock is limited.
Outside swimming season, the Rhine is still good for sitting on the banks and watching others.

Three areas to wander
- Grossbasel Altstadt and Muensterhill. The Muenster, the Pfalz terrace area and, nearby, the Kunstmuseum and the Antikenmuseum.
- Kleinbasel, Rhine side. The promenade and the opposite bank. We did not confirm specifics, so go for the walk rather than a target.
- St. Alban-Tal. The paper-mill area near the Kunstmuseum. Details not confirmed; a good place to follow the water without a plan.
A one-day solo itinerary (Wednesday or Thursday)
- Morning. Botanical Garden greenhouses (open from 9).
- Late morning. Walk the Altstadt to Muensterplatz and the Muenster area.
