Things to Do Alone in Calgary

Calgary in November is a city you plan from the inside out. Start on the Plus 15, the elevated walkway network through downtown, string together galleries, a library and a music museum, and step outside only when you want to. Nothing here needs a companion, and most of it is built for one person at their own pace.

Walk the Plus 15

The City of Calgary describes the Plus 15 as a skywalk network, and its page lists the hours: weekdays 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., weekends and statutory holidays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is closed on December 25. The City also notes that some bridges may have shorter hours, that hours are subject to change, and that individual links can close for construction. Check the City's page for current link closures (City of Calgary, Plus 15).

For a first outing alone, treat it as a route rather than a destination. You cannot get lost in a line, and a gallery is never far away.

Galleries along the way

The Werklund Centre (205 8 Avenue SE, the performing arts campus) shows art in eight spaces on and near the +15 level. Its galleries page says the +15 Galleries, at the west end of the walkway between City Hall and the Glenbow Museum building, are always open and always free, and the page as a whole is headed "Free to the public."

(Werklund Centre galleries). Because you can look in from outside and nobody checks a ticket, this is an easy place to practise staying a few minutes and then leaving. Our museum guide covers how to take your time in a gallery.

A museum built around sound

Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, is in the East Village at 850 4 Street SE. Its admission page lists daily hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (it notes hours may vary week to week), with last entry 1.5 hours before closing, and adult admission of $24.50. It also offers a pay-what-you-can option "to anyone, regardless of their financial situation, no questions asked." The site says it is a five to seven minute walk from City Hall LRT station (Studio Bell hours and admission, getting here).

A museum full of instruments suits one person well: you listen at your own speed and nobody waits for you at the next display.

The Confluence

The Confluence Historic Site and Parkland, previously known as Fort Calgary, lists winter hours of Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting 13 October (summer hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., apply from 16 May) (The Confluence). Its events page lists talks, film screenings and workshops that give you a reason to go and a script to follow; open it for the current dates (events).

A library seat that costs nothing

Calgary's Central Library (800 3 Street SE) is open Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 9 to 6, Saturday 9 to 5 and Sunday noon to 5. It lists holiday closures and short days on its page, so check the date you plan to go. The library page lists free Wi-Fi, study space and quiet study rooms (Calgary Public Library). Reading in a public place is one of the gentlest solo habits, and a library asks nothing in return.

What is open, and what is shut, for the season

Heritage Park's site says the Historical Village is closed for the season and reopens in May 2027, but the rest of the park stays open: Gasoline Alley Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Monday, The Selkirk Grille runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and the Railway Cafe 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (Heritage Park hours). A cafe lunch plus a vintage-vehicle museum is a tidy half day.

Other indoor options with official hours:

Eat among the stalls, then sit in the dark

The Calgary Farmers' Market has two locations. South (510 77 Avenue SE) is open Thursday to Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; West (25 Greenbriar Drive NW) is open Wednesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 9 to 5 (Calgary Farmers' Market). Eating at a stall is a low-pressure way to have lunch alone; see how to eat alone in public.

For the evening, the Globe Cinema describes itself as an independent classic movie house and lists today's showtimes on its home page (Globe Cinema). A film is company without conversation, which is why it makes a good first evening out (cinema guide).

Getting around

Calgary Transit lists an adult cash fare of $4.00, valid for 90 minutes, and says you can buy fares in its My Fare app or the Transit app (Calgary Transit fares). The City's pathways connect along the Bow and Elbow rivers, and it says it clears snow from about 400 kilometres of paved regional pathways, usually within 24 hours of a snowfall (City of Calgary pathways). Check its closures page before a river walk.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: walk the Plus 15 on a weekday, stop at the Werklund +15 Galleries for ten minutes, then take a seat in the Central Library.
  2. Medium: Studio Bell on a weekday morning, with the pay-what-you-can option if budget is a concern.
  3. Bold: an adult (18+) evening at TELUS Spark, or an event at The Confluence from its events page.

If you are comparing Canadian cities, Calgary is the one to choose for indoor wandering; Vancouver is about the water, Toronto about the lake ferry and Montreal about markets. The full list is in the all-cities hub, and first solo trip tips covers the basics of arriving somewhere new.
