Victoria rewards the opposite of a packed itinerary. The British Columbia capital is small, the Inner Harbour holds most of the big sights, and the best way to do it alone is to pick one thing per half day and let the rest happen on foot. In November, a few places change their hours, so the useful part of this guide is the calendar.
Begin in a bookshop
Munro's Books is described by Tourism Victoria as a destination for book lovers for 55 years, in a heritage building in downtown Victoria, with children's books, local history, fiction, poetry, bargain tables, stationery and journals (Tourism Victoria, Munro's Books). Check the shop for current opening hours.
A bookshop is the easiest thing in any city to do alone: nobody expects you to say anything, and wandering is the whole activity.
The Parliament walk, with a guide who is free
The BC Parliament Buildings (501 Belleville Street, facing the Inner Harbour) offer free guided tours of about 40 minutes. You do not need to register: arrive about ten minutes early and go to the Tour Desk inside the main entrance. The building is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and closed on weekends and holidays. Tour times differ by day (some weekdays have two or three tours, some only one), and the schedule for the coming week is posted online.
The Legislature says tour times change from week to week because of school and group bookings, and the next week's schedule is posted on Friday afternoons (Legislative Assembly of BC, public tours). A group tour with a guide is a social format where you can stay silent and nobody notices.
Mile 0, then the long way home
Beacon Hill Park (100 Cook Street) covers roughly 740,000 square metres of lawns, flower beds, natural areas and footpaths, and the City of Victoria notes it is Mile "0", the western end of the 8,000-kilometre Trans-Canada Highway. Dogs must be on leash, except in the leash-optional area south of Dallas Road (City of Victoria, Beacon Hill Park). Tourism Victoria describes the walk from the Inner Harbour: up Belleville Street past the Museum of Natural History and the IMAX theatre, right on Douglas Street and up a short hill to the park entrance (Tourism Victoria, Beacon Hill Park).
A park with a destination, the Mile 0 marker, gives a solo walk a finish line.
Fifty-five kilometres, in any size you like
The Galloping Goose Regional Trail is a former railway line running 55 kilometres from Victoria to Sooke, open to walking, cycling and running, and part of the Trans Canada Trail. The Capital Regional District posts service alerts on the trail page, including recent temporary closures, so look there before you set out (CRD, Galloping Goose). You can walk for twenty minutes and turn back; nothing about it requires you to finish.
A museum for a wet afternoon
The Royal BC Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed December 25 and January 1. It suggests allowing two to four hours for the main galleries, and lists the exhibition Ancient Egypt: Obsessed with Life from June 5, 2026 to January 3, 2027 (Royal BC Museum). Check the site for ticket prices.
Two smaller options:
- Maritime Museum of BC (744 Douglas Street) is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Maritime Museum of BC).
- Craigdarroch Castle, a National Historic Site built by coal baron Robert Dunsmuir, is open for tours Wednesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed Monday and Tuesday (Craigdarroch Castle).

What November changes
- Butchart Gardens: the Gardens' notice says that from November 1, 2026 the admission gates are open from 10:00 to 16:30 for the month, because British Columbia is moving to permanent year-round daylight saving time (Butchart Gardens).
- Victoria Harbour Ferry: its winter timetable is weekends only, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., from November 1 to March 15, and hours may change in bad weather (Victoria Harbour Ferry). A short harbour ride is one of the gentlest first outings alone.
- Fisherman's Wharf: Tourism Victoria describes a working harbour with food kiosks, shops and float homes, a place to eat on a dock and watch boats. Check individual kiosks for winter hours (Tourism Victoria, Fisherman's Wharf). For tips on sitting down to eat by yourself, read how to eat alone in public.
A cinema on campus
Cinecenta sits in the Student Union Building at the University of Victoria (3800 Finnerty Road). The general public is welcome. Its admission page lists $11 for the general public and $8 for all seats at screenings before 3:30 p.m. Tickets are sold only in person, from a box office that opens 40 minutes before each screening (Cinecenta, admission). See also the cinema guide.
Buses, without surprises
BC Transit lists an adult single ride at $3 and a DayPASS at $6, and its fares page lists Umo contactless payment. A banner on the same page warns that, since October 5, some trips may be delayed or cancelled because of a union overtime ban, and asks riders to check service alerts before travelling (BC Transit, Victoria fares). Leave extra time for a bus to Butchart Gardens or the university.
First solo outings
- Easy: half an hour in Munro's Books, then a walk to the Inner Harbour.
- Medium: a free Parliament Buildings tour on a weekday, followed by Beacon Hill Park and Mile 0.
- Bold: a Galloping Goose walk beyond the city streets, or a Saturday harbour ferry ride and a dock lunch at Fisherman's Wharf.
For other Canadian cities, see Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, and the full list in the all-cities hub. If you have just arrived, things to do alone in a new city is a good first read.
