Portland, Maine (not Portland, Oregon) is a harbour city, and the harbour is the easiest way to spend a day alone: a ferry runs to the Casco Bay islands all year, the art museum opens its doors free on Friday evenings, and a lighthouse sits a short trip out of town. November is the quiet season, so this guide notes what is on a winter schedule and what has closed.

The harbour as your plan: Casco Bay ferries
Casco Bay Lines describes itself as a ferry system with year-round passenger, freight, postal and vehicle service to the islands of Casco Bay from Portland, with routes to Peaks, Little Diamond, Great Diamond, Long, Chebeague and Cliff islands, and Diamond Cove. For Peaks Island its site currently shows the winter schedule, effective October 13, 2026 to May 20, 2027, with separate Sunday to Thursday and Friday and Saturday timetables (Casco Bay Lines, Peaks Island schedule). Check the schedule for first and last boats before you plan a return. A ferry crossing is a good solo outing: everyone faces the water, and the only plan is to get off and walk.
Free hours at the art museum
Portland Museum of Art (7 Congress Square). The museum lists free admission every Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., and on the third Thursday of every month it is free all day with extended hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Everyone aged 21 and under is always free, and local university students get free admission. Its cafe and store do not require an admission ticket (PMA: plan your visit). A cafe table in a museum is a comfortable place to be alone.
Free rooms in town
- Portland Public Library, Downtown Branch (5 Monument Square). Open Monday and Friday and Saturday 10am to 5pm, and Tuesday to Thursday 10am to 6pm; closed Sunday. The library also has a Peaks Island branch and lists park and museum passes among its services (Portland Public Library). A reading room is the simplest place to be alone in public.
- Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art & Design (522 Congress Street). Open Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 5pm, with Thursdays until 7pm and First Fridays until 8pm. Admission is always free, and donations are appreciated (ICA at MECA&D).
- Maine Jewish Museum (East End). Housed in the restored Etz Chaim Synagogue, with art exhibitions. It lists hours of 12pm to 4pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, closed Tuesday and Saturday. It also lists a First Friday Art Walk on the first Friday evening of every month, 5 to 8pm, when the city's artists, galleries and arts venues open their doors (Maine Jewish Museum).
Markets and walking
Portland Farmers' Market (Deering Oaks Park). Saturdays and Wednesdays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., though November markets open at 8 a.m. The market stays outdoors through November 25, and its indoor Winter Market starts December 5 (Portland Farmers' Market). It says it has been feeding Portland since 1768, which makes it a good first stop for a conversation with a grower.
Self-guided neighbourhood tours. Greater Portland Landmarks offers interactive maps for more than a dozen Portland neighbourhoods, including Peaks Island, East Bayside and Congress Street, for a self-guided tour on your phone (Greater Portland Landmarks: walking tours).
Portland Observatory. The last remaining maritime signal tower in the United States is closed for the season until May 2027 (Greater Portland Landmarks: Portland Observatory). Plan the tower for spring.
A lighthouse outing
Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park (Cape Elizabeth). The park's site calls the lighthouse the most photographed in America and the oldest in Maine, and describes more than 90 acres with lawns, a beach, a Cliff Walk Trail and former artillery batteries. The free park-staff walking tours run only from mid-May to mid-October. The museum is in the former keepers' house; for current visiting hours, use the park's own site (Portland Head Light: what to do, museum). A coastal walk is easy to do alone at your own pace.
Evening options
Portland Stage. The theatre lists a run of productions from December 5 to 24, 2026 (Portland Stage); its visit page covers parking near the theatre (Portland Stage: visit). One ticket is simple to book.
Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum (65 Thames Street). The heritage railway lists seasonal train rides, including The Polar Express Train Ride, on its site (Maine Narrow Gauge). Check its ticket page for the current schedule.
November at a glance
- Open and on a winter schedule: Casco Bay Lines ferries, the Portland Museum of Art, Portland Stage and the Portland Farmers' Market.
- Closed for the season: the Portland Observatory, until May 2027.
- Seasonal tours: the free walking tours at Fort Williams Park run only from mid-May to mid-October.
- Coming up: the farmers market moves indoors on December 5, and Portland Stage lists a run from December 5.
Because the free museum hours fall on Friday evenings and the third Thursday, and the ICA is free all week, you can build a week around them: a market on Saturday morning, a museum on Friday after four, the First Friday Art Walk on the first Friday of the month, and a ferry day when the weather suits you.
First solo outings
- Easy: Friday at the PMA. Go between 4 and 8 p.m. when it is free, then have a coffee in the cafe.
- Middle: a morning at the farmers market. Go on a Saturday, buy something small, and ask the grower how to cook it.
- Bold: a ferry day. Take the Peaks Island ferry, spend a few hours on the island and come back on a boat from the winter schedule.
