Things to Do Alone in Boston

Boston is a small, walkable city where the best solo days combine a free room, one big museum and an evening that does not end at five. Harvard's art museums charge nothing, two of the big museums stay open late on Thursday and Friday, and the Freedom Trail is a route you can follow at your own pace without joining anyone.

For the general how-to, see things to do alone in a new city. More destinations are in the cities hub.

Start on the Freedom Trail

The National Park Service runs Boston National Historical Park, and its visitor information page says you can collect free maps at its visitor centers and join scheduled free ranger-guided talks and tours. You can also follow the Freedom Trail and the Black Heritage Trail on the NPS website or with its free app (NPS Boston National Historical Park). That makes the trail a good first outing: you decide how far to go, and no one waits for you.

The NPS hours page says most park sites are open year-round but hours change with the season, and that peak season is May to October. In November, check each site before you walk. It also lists the grounds of the Charlestown Navy Yard as open 24 hours a day, which suits a walk at any time.

Two parks in the middle

Boston Common and the Public Garden sit side by side downtown. The Friends of the Public Garden say the Common, the Garden and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall are free and open 365 days a year, with the parks open from 6:30am to 11pm and open to pedestrians around the clock (Friends of the Public Garden). The City of Boston calls the Common America's oldest park, founded in 1634, and says the Frog Pond provides skating in winter (City of Boston). A bench here costs nothing and works as a break between museums.

Cross the river for free art

Harvard Art Museums (Cambridge, just outside Harvard Square). Admission is free to all visitors every day. The museums are open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, and closed on Mondays and major holidays (Harvard Art Museums). Check in at the visitor services desk when you arrive. If you want to see art alone without paying for it, this is the easiest place to start; the museum guide has pacing tips.

Thursday and Friday nights

The Gardner and the MFA are in the same part of the city, so a Thursday could be an MFA afternoon, a break, then the free Gardner evening. Choose one gallery at a time rather than both.

A twelve-floor library

The Boston Athenaeum on Beacon Street is a membership library, but visitors are welcome. First-floor admission lets you browse the collection and rotating exhibitions, and the one-hour docent-led Art & Architecture Tour is described as suitable for individuals and small groups. A one-day membership costs $40 and gives access to the building's floors. It is open Monday to Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 5pm, and closed on Sunday (Boston Athenaeum visit page and tours).

Lunch indoors

A film in Brookline

The Coolidge Corner Theatre is a nonprofit cinema in Brookline. Adult tickets are $17, and the first showing of a feature before 3pm is $15. Its box office does not take sales over the phone, and it opens half an hour before the first showtime (Coolidge ticket prices). An early matinee is the gentlest way to try a cinema alone.

Getting around

The MBTA fares page lists a one-way subway fare of $2.40 and a local bus fare of $1.70, payable with a CharlieCard, CharlieTicket, contactless payment or cash. Children aged 11 and under ride free (MBTA fares).

First solo outings

  1. Easy: Harvard Art Museums on a Tuesday to Sunday, for as long as you like, free.
  2. Medium: a Thursday evening at the Gardner (free, 5 to 9pm) or the MFA (open to 10pm).
  3. Bolder: the Athenaeum's one-hour Art & Architecture Tour, then lunch at the Boston Public Market.
