Chattanooga suits a solo trip without a car: a free electric shuttle links downtown, the art district sits on a bluff over the Tennessee River, and a funicular carries you up Lookout Mountain. Most of what follows is walkable once you are in the centre, and several stops are free or have a free day each month.
All hours below were checked on 2026-11-01 against the page linked in each entry.
The bluff: art, coffee and a sculpture garden
Hunter Museum of American Art. At 10 Bluff View Avenue. Hours: Monday and Wednesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday noon to 5 p.m., closed Tuesdays. It is also closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Admission is free to all during Throwback Thursdays, the first Thursday of each month from 4 to 8 p.m. (Hunter Museum visit page). Visit Chattanooga adds that the permanent collection is free then, with $5 for special exhibitions (Free things to do).
Bluff View Art District. The district describes itself as Chattanooga's first art district, with gardens, plazas and courtyards. Rembrandt's Coffee House, established in 1994, serves house-roasted coffee, handmade pastries and a menu of soups, salads and sandwiches, and the River Gallery Sculpture Garden is next door (Bluff View Art District). A patio table with coffee is a comfortable way to sit alone; see how to eat alone in public.
North Shore and the riverfront
Coolidge Park and Renaissance Park. Visit Chattanooga describes Coolidge Park on the North Shore as a place to picnic and sit by the river, and Renaissance Park, next door, as a spot for picnics and scenic views of downtown (Visit Chattanooga). The Walnut Street Bridge is being renovated; its latest posted update targets a fall 2026 reopening, so check its site for the current status before planning a crossing (Walnut Street Bridge).
Ed Johnson Memorial and First Street Sculpture Gardens. The same tourism page points to these on the south side of the Walnut Street Bridge crossing, including Native American art beside stairs that lead to the river (Visit Chattanooga).
Southside sculpture
Sculpture Fields at Montague Park. A 33-acre outdoor sculpture park in the Southside, with a self-guided tour and a park map on its site (Sculpture Fields). Walking a sculpture trail at your own pace needs no company.
Up Lookout Mountain
Incline Railway. The operator describes it as the world's steepest passenger railway, with daily departures from the lower station in St. Elmo or the upper station. Its FAQ suggests planning at least an hour for the experience, and there is an observation deck at the top (Incline Railway, FAQ). Check the operator for the current schedule before you go.
Lookout Mountain and Point Park. The National Park Service says all units are open for visitation during daylight hours. The Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, and the Point Park main entrance gate opens daily at 8:30 a.m. (NPS operating hours).
Market days
Chattanooga Market. Its November listings show Sunday markets starting at 11 a.m. and an Erlanger Market on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. with artisan food, locally made arts and crafts, and a featured food truck (Chattanooga Market).
Getting around
Visit Chattanooga lists a free electric shuttle for crossing downtown (Visit Chattanooga). CARTA, the regional transit authority, manages the Downtown Shuttle and the Incline Railway, and offers a trip planner and a transit app (CARTA).
Planning a car-free day
Start on the bluff, where the Hunter Museum and Bluff View share the same hillside, and keep the Thursday late opening in mind if you want the museum at the end of the day. The Incline's lower station in St. Elmo has shops, restaurants and attractions around it, including a microbrewery tour, a coffee shop and an indoor climbing wall, according to the operator, and the upper station has a pizzeria and a bar if you want to eat at the top (Incline Railway). Chickamauga Battlefield also has its own visitor center, open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, for a longer National Park Service trip outside the city (NPS). All National Park Service units close to public use half an hour after official sunset, so plan to be out before dark.
First solo outings
- Easy. Coffee at Rembrandt's, then a walk through the River Gallery Sculpture Garden.
- Medium. The Hunter Museum on a Thursday, when it stays open until 8 p.m.
- Bold. Ride the Incline, then walk to Point Park when the gate opens at 8:30 a.m.
