Things to Do Alone in Cincinnati

Cincinnati is an easy city to start in if you are watching your budget: the Cincinnati Art Museum's general admission is free every day, the streetcar through downtown and Over-the-Rhine is free to ride, and Findlay Market lets you eat from stalls. This guide builds a few November days around those.

Last checked 2026-11-01. Hours come from each venue's own site.

Free admission, taken seriously

Cincinnati Art Museum. The museum says general admission is always free. Its hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 11 to 5, Thursday 11 to 8, and Friday to Sunday 11 to 5, closed on Mondays. It is closed on Thursday 26 November (Thanksgiving). Special exhibitions are ticketed: The Art of Charley Harper runs from 16 October 2026 to 7 March 2027 and is free for members (Cincinnati Art Museum, tickets and admission). Because you can enter without paying, you can leave after one gallery if you want, and nobody notices. See visiting a museum alone for more.

Krohn Conservatory. In Eden Park, between East Walnut Hills and Mount Adams, next to the art museum. Visit Cincy describes a 1933 Art Deco greenhouse with over 3,500 plant species, seven collections including the Palm House and Orchid House, and says you can wander on your own (Visit Cincy: Krohn Conservatory). Check the conservatory's hours and admission before you go.

Taft Museum of Art. A historic house museum, open 10 to 5 Wednesday to Monday. The museum's site lists Free Sundays and Free Mondays among its sponsors and gives a general admission price for other days (Taft Museum of Art). Rooms in a house are a gentler scale than a large museum.

Contemporary Arts Center. Galleries are open Wednesday 10 to 5, Thursday and Friday 10 to 7, and Saturday and Sunday 10 to 4, closed Monday and Tuesday. General admission is listed at $12 (Contemporary Arts Center). Friday evening is the late option.

Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal. Open daily 10 to 5, closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and open 10 to 2 on 25 November and 24 December 2026. The LEGO Jurassic World exhibition runs until 4 January 2027, and the building also has an OMNIMAX theatre (Cincinnati Museum Center). Its size means you can take your time alone without ever feeling watched.

Over-the-Rhine on foot

Findlay Market. Described as Ohio's oldest continuously operated public market, at 1801 Race Street in Over-the-Rhine. It is open Tuesday to Friday 9 to 6, Saturday 8 to 6 and Sunday 10 to 4, closed Monday, with more than 50 full-time merchants. The farmers market runs Saturday 8 to 2 and Sunday 10 to 2 (Findlay Market). A market is a natural place for one person: buy something small at a stall, then keep walking. Read how to eat alone in public for the next step.

Washington Park. The park's site lists free programmes and events in its calendar (Washington Park). Check the calendar before you go because programmes can change.

Fountain Square. Downtown, at Fifth and Vine, the symbolic centre of the city since 1871 with the Genius of Water fountain. Visit Cincy says that in winter the square gains an ice rink and a warming tent (Visit Cincy: Fountain Square). Sitting by the fountain is a no-ticket way to be around people.

The streetcar. The Cincinnati tourism board calls the Cincinnati Connector streetcar free to ride and a way to explore downtown and Over-the-Rhine without a car (Cincinnati USA). Use it to link the market and the park.

Stars and the oldest telescope

Cincinnati Observatory. At 3489 Observatory Place in Mount Lookout, the observatory runs public programmes. Its Astronomy Evening is listed as a weekly public programme from 7 to 8:30 pm: a 90-minute presentation, then a hands-on tour of the 1845 Mitchel telescope and viewing through it, weather permitting. The events page shows the dates and registration (Cincinnati Observatory). The observatory calls the evenings a good way to get acquainted with what it offers, and everyone is looking up, not at you.

Putting a day together

The free options make it easy to build a day without committing to any single stop. A Saturday could start at Findlay Market from 8 am, move on by streetcar to Washington Park for whatever free programme is listed that day, and finish at the Cincinnati Art Museum, which is free every day. Nothing needs to be booked in advance, and you can drop any stop. On a weekday evening, the Art Museum (Thursday until 8 pm) and the Contemporary Arts Center (Thursday and Friday until 7 pm) are the two places listed with later hours.

Getting around

Metro lists a local-route day pass at $4.40, good for 24 hours from activation. Tap&Save fare capping in the Transit app limits local fares to $4.40 a day (Metro fares). Day passes cannot be bought in the Transit app, per the same page.

Three first outings

  1. Easy: the Cincinnati Art Museum on a Tuesday or Wednesday, one gallery, then home.
  2. Medium: Findlay Market on a Saturday, then the Taft Museum.
  3. Bolder: An Astronomy Evening at the observatory, from 7 pm. You will need to travel there and back in the dark, so plan your route first.
