Denver, Colorado is easiest alone if you pick one anchor and let public transport do the planning. Denver Union Station is the anchor: from there a free shuttle runs the length of 16th Street, trains and buses fan out across the metro area, and November has a free day at the Denver Art Museum. Pick the day you want and work backwards.
Start at Union Station
Denver Union Station in LoDo is the city's main transit hub. It serves Amtrak (including the California Zephyr and the Winter Park Express) as well as RTD buses and rail, with seven rail lines meeting there. The station's own page lists the Free MallRide, a shuttle that runs seven days a week along the 16th Street Mall between Civic Center Station and Union Station, with a stop on every block (Denver Union Station).
Walk to the Millennium Bridge, built in 2002, which connects Riverfront Park with the 16th Street Mall and offers skyline views by stairs or glass elevator (same page). A bridge or a bench is a good place to look at a map before you decide.
Free days at the art museum
The Denver Art Museum runs SCFD Free Days when general admission is free for all visitors. General admission is free several times a year; its 2026 list includes 8 December. General admission covers the Hamilton Building, Martin Building and The Kirkland, and ticketed exhibitions are separate. The museum is open Sunday, Monday and Thursday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, Tuesday 10am to 8pm, and closed on Wednesdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays have peak pricing, so a free day or a Tuesday evening is the budget-friendly way in (Denver Art Museum). Read how to visit a museum alone if you want a pace for a big building.
Late rooms: Fridays and Tuesdays
- Denver Museum of Nature and Science, 2001 Colorado Boulevard. Open 9am to 5pm every day and 9am to 9pm on most Fridays. Open 9am to 3pm on Thanksgiving and closed 25 December (DMNS). A planetarium and theatre listing are on its menu, but check what is on before you book.
- Denver Public Library, Central Library, 10 W. 14th Avenue Parkway. Open Monday to Thursday 10am to 6pm, Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 5pm (Denver Public Library). For a first outing, an hour with a book in a reading room costs nothing.
Eat in RiNo
Denver Central Market is a food hall in RiNo (River North), Denver's arts-and-industry neighbourhood, with 11 vendors under one roof and indoor and outdoor seating. Ordering is at each vendor's counter, which suits one person. Vendor hours vary; the market lists Sunday to Thursday 8am to 9pm and Friday and Saturday 8am to 11pm, with the bar slightly different (Denver Central Market). Read how to eat alone in public before your first counter order.
Red Rocks on a non-show day
Red Rocks Park in Morrison is a Denver Mountain Park, and its official page states that admission and parking are free for the park, the amphitheatre, the Visitor Center and the Trading Post. The park and trails open one hour before sunrise and close one hour after sunset. From November to February the Visitor Center is open 8am to 4pm and the Trading Post 9am to 5pm, and both close on Thanksgiving and Christmas. On show days the amphitheatre is open only until about 2pm, so go on a non-event day (Red Rocks: getting here).
The Trading Post Trail is 1.4 miles through rock formations, valleys and a meadow, with some rough terrain where hiking shoes are recommended. The park's recreation page warns that weather can change quickly (Red Rocks recreation). The Visitor Center at the Top Plaza has a museum about the landscape, the amphitheatre and its music history, and a coffee counter (Visitor Center). Red Rocks is in Morrison, outside central Denver, so work out how you will get there before you plan the day.
