Things to Do Alone in Fort Worth

Fort Worth is easiest alone if you plan around two museum evenings: the Amon Carter is free and stays open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and the Modern is free and open until 8 p.m. on Fridays. Add the Stockyards cattle drive, free music downtown and the Trinity Trails, and you have a solo weekend without a big budget.

Thursday and Friday: the Cultural District

The Cultural District puts three art museums close together, which means you can see one properly and leave when you have had enough.

Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Admission is free. Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday noon to 5 p.m., and closed Mondays and Thanksgiving Day. Free parking is available in the museum's lot on Camp Bowie Boulevard (Amon Carter). Thursday evening is the quietest solo slot: arrive late afternoon and stay until closing.

Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. At 3200 Darnell Street. Open Tuesday to Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Mondays and Thanksgiving. Adult tickets are $16, with half-price admission on Sundays and free admission on Fridays. "In the Making: Stories from the Collection" is on view from 31 October 2026 to 15 August 2027. The Modern also runs conversational docent tours you can drop in on (The Modern). A drop-in tour is a ready-made group where nobody expects you to know anyone.

Kimbell Art Museum. Visit Fort Worth, the city's tourism board, says the permanent collection is always free, while special exhibitions may charge (Visit Fort Worth). Check the museum for current hours.

The Stockyards: a cattle drive you can watch alone

The Fort Worth Herd leads longhorns down East Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards every day at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. It is free. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. there is also a "Behind-the-Drive Experience" at 129 East Exchange (Fort Worth Herd). The Stockyards site lists the PBR Stockyards Showcase on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and a Stockyards Farmers Market with artisan vendors on weekends (Fort Worth Stockyards). The drive is a short, standing, no-reservation outing, which makes it a good first stop.

Gardens and water

Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., last entry 4 p.m. In November: the outdoor exhibit "Enchanted Garden" runs to 30 November, "Christmas in the Garden" (a one-mile trail of light installations set to holiday music) runs 20 November to 3 January, and a monthly "Drawing in the Garden" class is open for registration. The site notes that road construction affects part of the parking lot, so allow extra time (Botanic Garden).

Fort Worth Water Gardens. Four acres of parkland beside the Convention Center, with an active pool where you walk down a staircase among cascading water and a meditation pool with bench seating (Visit Fort Worth). The meditation pool is the one to pick for a quiet ten minutes.

Trinity Trails. A trail system of over 100 miles for walking, running and cycling, according to the tourism board (Visit Fort Worth). Walk out for twenty minutes and turn back.

Downtown in the evening

Sundance Square. The tourism board lists free live music by local artists from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday (Visit Fort Worth). Stand at the back or sit at a table with a drink; a free show asks nothing of you.

Fort Worth Central Library. The tourism board notes classes and workshops at the downtown library, free of cost (Visit Fort Worth). Check the library's calendar for the current schedule.

A two-evening plan

Thursday: the Amon Carter is open until 8 p.m., so spend the late afternoon with the collection, then leave when it closes. Friday: the Modern is free and open until 8 p.m., with the new "In the Making" display on view. Both museums close on Thanksgiving Day, so check ahead if you are in town that week. If you want the cattle drive too, the 4 p.m. run on either day fits between the museums and an evening in Sundance Square, where free music runs from 7 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. Splitting the days this way means each outing is one stop long, which is the easiest size when you are doing it alone.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: The cattle drive at 11:30 a.m., then lunch in the Stockyards.
  2. Medium: Thursday at the Amon Carter, staying until 8 p.m., or Friday at the Modern with a drop-in docent tour.
  3. Bold: Sundance Square on a Friday night: free music, a table and one drink.
