Things to Do Alone in Jacksonville

Jacksonville is a city built around the St. Johns River, and its best solo outings follow the water: a free monorail through downtown, a Saturday market under a bridge, a museum with gardens on the riverbank and a national preserve to the northeast. Most of it is free or low-key, so you can drop in without a plan.

A river city

Visit Jacksonville says the city has 1,100 miles of navigable water and more shoreline than any other city in the nation, and lists Riverside Avondale as a walkable historic district with shopping and dining (Visit Jacksonville). It helps to treat the river as your map: the museum, the market and the bridge all sit within the Riverside area.

A free ride downtown

JTA Skyway. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority describes the Skyway as a free, automated monorail connecting downtown Jacksonville (JTA). It is an easy way to get between downtown stops without a car; check JTA's site on the day for service notices.

Art and a market, on a schedule

First Wednesday Art Walk. Downtown Vision runs a self-guided tour of galleries, businesses and restaurants on the first Wednesday of every month, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., rain or shine. The hub is James Weldon Johnson Park at 135 W. Monroe Street, with vendors, food trucks and live music. MOCA Jacksonville, at 333 North Laura Street, offers free admission during the walk (Downtown Vision). Because the walk is self-guided, you can arrive, browse and leave when you like.

Riverside Arts Market. At 715 Riverside Avenue, under the Fuller Warren Bridge. The tourism board lists it every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, with free admission; the listing shows a date every Saturday through the winter (Visit Jacksonville: Riverside Arts Market). A market gives you a reason to ask a maker one question.

A museum with a late night

Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. On Riverside Avenue. The museum is closed Mondays and open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. Ticketed admission covers all galleries, special exhibitions and the gardens; the adult price is listed at $20, and college students are free Tuesday to Friday with ID. Parking at the museum lots is paid through ParkMobile (Cummer Museum). The Thursday evening hours give you a quiet, low-pressure time to see a gallery after work.

The preserve to the northeast

Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve. The National Park Service says activities in the preserve are free, but sites are spread out and some are over an hour apart. There is no food at any park site, though picnicking is permitted, with picnic facilities at Fort Caroline, Kingsley Plantation and elsewhere. The Theodore Roosevelt Area is open from 9 a.m. to sunset daily and has trails through several ecosystems and a birding platform; the Ribault Club's Fort George Island Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. The NPS recommends bug repellent, and the dock at Kingsley Plantation closes at 4:30 p.m. (NPS: plan your visit, NPS: basic information).

Zoo and stage

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. At 370 Zoo Parkway, open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with last tickets at 4 p.m., except on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The zoo describes more than 100 acres of exhibits and gardens, so a zoo visit works as a slow, self-paced walk with something to look at every few minutes (Jacksonville Zoo).

Florida Theatre. The downtown theatre lists its upcoming shows and screenings online, so booking a single seat is simple (Florida Theatre).

How to start in a spread-out city

Jacksonville is large, so choose one area per outing rather than trying to cross town. Riverside is the easiest first area: the Saturday market and the Cummer Museum are both on or near Riverside Avenue. Downtown suits an evening, with the monthly art walk and the Skyway. The preserve is its own day, because the National Park Service notes that its sites can be over an hour apart; start with the visitor center at Fort Caroline, and pick up a trail map before you hike.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: a Saturday at the market. Walk the Riverside Arts Market and buy one thing.
  2. Middle: a Thursday evening at the Cummer. Stay until the 8 p.m. close.
  3. Bold: a preserve day. Pack food and water (the NPS says none is sold at its sites), hike the Theodore Roosevelt Area and visit a second site.
