Things to Do Alone in Lexington

This guide is about Lexington, Kentucky, the Bluegrass city that calls itself the Horse Capital of the World, not any other Lexington. November is when its calendar turns: the Kentucky Horse Park moves to shorter winter hours, a historic house closes for the year at the end of the month, and a racecourse that is open to the public all year keeps its early-morning kitchen going. Alone, the trick is to go where the schedule is clear.

Horse country, off-season

Kentucky Horse Park. The park's winter season begins on November 13, 2026, with hours of Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Monday to Thursday, and adult admission of $20 (seniors $15, military with ID $15, students $10). In winter the park offers Stall-Side Chats with the horses, weather permitting, and the Trolley Stop Cafe is closed for the season. It also lists holiday closings around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Admission includes the next day free, apart from major events and holidays (Kentucky Horse Park: hours and admission).

Keeneland. The racecourse at 4201 Versailles Road says it is open 365 days a year to the public. Visitors are welcome for tours, morning workouts, the Keeneland Shop and the Keeneland Library, a public research library established in 1939. The shop is open Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Track Kitchen serves home-style food Monday to Friday from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the site says you do not need to be a horseman to enjoy it. A breakfast there is an easy, early start for one. (Keeneland: visiting, Keeneland: home).

Two historic houses

Mary Todd Lincoln House. At 578 West Main Street, the girlhood home of Mary Todd Lincoln describes itself as the first historic site dedicated to a first lady. It is open March 15 to November 30, Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with last entry at 3 p.m., and is closed on Sundays. Self-guided admission is $15 for adults and guided tours are $20; both options exist, so you can go alone at your own speed or join a guide (Mary Todd Lincoln House).

Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate. The estate lists its hours by month. From April to November it is open Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. In March and December the hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. It is closed Mondays, major holidays, January and February (Ashland). November is the last full month before the December change, and the winter closure arrives in January.

Film, books and a free evening

Kentucky Theatre. The downtown cinema lists current films including Fjord, You Can See Everything and Sense and Sensibility. It also lists A Charlie Brown Christmas & Duke Ellington's Nutcracker on Sunday, December 13 at 5:30 p.m., a pay-what-you-can screening featuring the Origins Jazz All Stars (Kentucky Theatre). A live-music screening gives the room something to talk about even if you never speak to anyone. For more, see how to go to the cinema alone.

Lexington Public Library, Central Library. At 140 East Main Street, open Monday to Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The page lists a gallery, the Kentucky Room, a Friends Book Cellar and a Book-a-Librarian service for one-on-one help (Lexington Public Library: Central Library). The Lextran Transit Center is listed with the building.

Outdoors in November

Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. A 734-acre sanctuary on the outskirts of Lexington, bordering the Kentucky River, with ten miles of trails through meadows, woodlands and streams. From November to March it is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The city warns that it may close admission during high visitation until parking spots open up, mainly at weekends, school breaks and holidays, so a weekday suits it better (Raven Run Nature Sanctuary).

The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky. At 500 Alumni Drive on the University of Kentucky campus, the 100-acre public garden includes the Walk Across Kentucky, a native plant collection. The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk and the Dorotha Smith Oatts Visitor Center is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Arboretum, VisitLEX: outdoors).

Getting around

VisitLEX lists LexRide, a free downtown shuttle between Downtown, the Distillery District and the Warehouse Block, but says it runs Thursday to Saturday from April to October, so it is not available in November (VisitLEX: LexRide). The Horse Park, Keeneland and Raven Run are outside the walkable centre, so plan how you will reach them. If you want a drink with dinner, VisitLEX lists the Distillery District and bourbon bars, but nothing here needs one.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: a morning at Keeneland. Have breakfast at the Track Kitchen, then browse the Keeneland Shop.
  2. Middle: a weekday in town. Visit the Mary Todd Lincoln House on a Monday to Saturday before November 30, then walk to the Central Library.
  3. Bold: a winter weekend at the Horse Park. Go on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday after November 13 and join a Stall-Side Chat.

Take a bread-making class

Solo Era has a food mission at level 4: "Take a bread-making class." The prompt is to join an introductory class alone and leave with a loaf or dough you helped prepare. A Track Kitchen breakfast is the easy end of eating alone in Lexington; a class where you cook beside strangers is the bolder end, so look for a beginner session in the city's local listings. Free to download. A subscription is required to start missions. Prices and any free trial are shown in the app and depend on the offer and eligibility.
