Miami is spread out, so the trick alone is to start small and free. Ride the Metromover, which costs nothing, have a coffee at a window in Little Havana, and save the museums for the nights when they stay open late. You do not need a plan for the whole day, because each piece below works on its own.
Start on the Metromover
The Metromover is a free elevated people mover with 21 stations in downtown Miami, Omni and Brickell. The county says it runs seven days a week and serves Bayside Marketplace and the Kaseya Center. Because it is free, there is nothing to figure out and no cost to getting on the wrong train and riding a lap.
Check the notice before you go, because the system is being upgraded. As of 24 October the Financial District station is closed for five weeks, and the county posts any loop changes and shuttle service in the same notice (Miami-Dade County: Metromover, last checked 2026-11-01). It is a gentle first outing: ride a full loop with a window seat, get off at the stop with the best view, and get back on. The same idea works in any city, as in things to do alone in a new city.
A cafecito at the window
Little Havana's Calle Ocho (8th Street) is where coffee is a social habit. The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau describes the ventanita as a window where you can buy coffee to go, and says you can chat with locals there, or order a cafecito with a pastelito. It names Versailles, a landmark since 1971, and La Carreta, founded in 1976 on Calle Ocho, as long-running Cuban restaurants (Miami and Beaches: Cuban food guide, last checked 2026-11-01). Standing at a window for two minutes is an easy way to be alone in public, because nobody expects you to sit or talk.
Nearby, Maximo Gomez Park, known as Domino Park, is on Calle Ocho. The tourism board says regulars sip Cuban coffee and play dominoes at any hour, that games are typically for members, and that the players do not mind an audience. There are benches around the edge for spectators (Miami and Beaches: Domino Park, last checked 2026-11-01). Sit, watch and leave when you like. Late nights on Miami Beach
Two Miami Beach museums are open into the evening on particular days, which gives you a reason to go out after dark and something to look at.
The Wolfsonian is a design museum at 10th and Washington in South Beach. It is closed Monday and Tuesday, open 10 am to 6 pm Wednesday and Thursday, 10 am to 9 pm on Friday, and 10 am to 6 pm on weekends (The Wolfsonian: Visit, last checked 2026-11-01).
The Bass is a contemporary art museum. It is open noon to 5 pm Wednesday to Sunday and closed on Monday and Tuesday. Admission is free on Third Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm. The general ticket is $15 (The Bass: Visit, last checked 2026-11-01). A free evening is a good test run, because you can leave after twenty minutes without feeling you wasted a ticket.
The tourism board also lists the Art Deco Museum inside the Art Deco Welcome Center in South Beach, which explains the architecture along the strip (Miami and Beaches: South Beach). For more on museums alone, see how to visit a museum alone.
Water and green you can sit beside
Bayfront Park. A downtown waterfront park, open daily 7 am to 11 pm, free admission 365 days a year. Maurice A. Ferre Park next to it is open 7 am to 10 pm (Bayfront Park Management Trust, last checked 2026-11-01). Pair it with the Metromover: ride in, walk to the water.
Venetian Pool. A historic public pool in Coral Gables. It is closed on Mondays, open 11 am to 5:30 pm Tuesday to Friday and 10 am to 4:30 pm on weekends. The non-resident adult rate is $23, and tickets stop selling once the pool reaches capacity, so go on a weekday (City of Coral Gables: Venetian Pool, last checked 2026-11-01).
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Vizcaya hosts a Village Farmers Market on Sundays. Check the site for the week's market hours and status before you go (Vizcaya, last checked 2026-11-01). A market is a good solo choice because there is always something to browse.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Lists a holiday event, "Holidays at Fairchild, A Very Merry Garden", running until 24 December (Fairchild, last checked 2026-11-01).
Wynwood Walls. The tourism board calls it an outdoor street-art museum at 2516 NW 2nd Avenue, with murals and sculptures by more than 120 artists from over 25 countries (Miami and Beaches: Wynwood Walls, last checked 2026-11-01).
First solo outings
- Easy: Ride one full Metromover loop on the Omni or Inner Loop and get off at Bayfront Park for ten minutes at the water.
- Medium: Go to Calle Ocho, order a cafecito at a window, and watch the dominoes from a bench for a few minutes.
- Bold: Go to The Bass on a Third Thursday between 6 and 9 pm. It is free, and you can look at just one room.
