Things to Do Alone in Milwaukee

Milwaukee in November is a city for sitting in good rooms: a 1927 movie palace, a lakefront art museum that lowers its price on Thursday nights, a brewery beer hall and an indoor public market. Each of these works with one ticket and no conversation required, so this guide is organised around the dark-room, bright-room and long-walk rhythm of a Milwaukee day.

Last checked 2026-11-01. Hours come from each venue's own site.

Two movie palaces for one seat

Milwaukee Film operates two historic cinemas. The Oriental Theatre at 2230 N. Farwell Ave opened on 2 July 1927 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Downer Theatre at 2589 N. Downer Ave opened on 3 December 1915 and is described as Wisconsin's oldest still-operating movie theatre (Milwaukee Film: historic theaters). Going alone to either is easy: you buy one seat, the lights go down and the room does the rest. Check the "What's Playing" page for current titles before you pick a night (Milwaukee Film).

A theatre built for crowds is also a good place to try going out alone for the first time, because the evening has a clear start and end.

The lakefront, on a Thursday

Milwaukee Art Museum. The museum is open Wednesday 10 am to 5 pm, Thursday 10 to 8 and Friday to Sunday 10 to 5, and closed Monday and Tuesday. Every Thursday from 4 to 8 pm admission is pay-what-you-wish. To mark 25 years of the Quadracci Pavilion, visitors get 25% off when they come after 3 pm through Sunday, 22 November (Milwaukee Art Museum).

Milwaukee County War Memorial Center. Next door on the lakefront at 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, it keeps off-season hours from Labor Day to Memorial Day of 8 am to 6 pm daily, and it is closed on holidays and for private events (War Memorial Center). Visit Milwaukee lists it among the free arts and culture stops, so it pairs well with a museum visit.

Downtown on foot

Milwaukee Central Library. Visit Milwaukee describes the Central Branch as a place to admire the architecture, browse books and see rotating art exhibits, and lists it as free. Hours are on the library's own site, so check them before you go (Visit Milwaukee: free things to do).

Milwaukee Public Market. In the Historic Third Ward at 400 N. Water Street, it houses independent merchants. Hours are Monday to Saturday 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday 10 am to 6 pm (Milwaukee Public Market). The simplest solo plan is to pick one stand, eat there and walk on.

Milwaukee RiverWalk. Visit Milwaukee describes the Riverwalk as a path that winds through the heart of downtown, with public art, restaurants and views of the river (Visit Milwaukee). Walk it between the market and the library, with no timetable.

Basilica of St. Josaphat. Visit Milwaukee highlights free tours of the basilica's interior and history (Visit Milwaukee). A guided tour is a structured way to be in a group without having to talk.

A beer hall seat

Lakefront Brewery. At 1872 North Commerce Street, the brewery lists a beer hall and a brewery tour. Hours are Monday to Thursday 3 to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 9 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm (Lakefront Brewery). The beer hall menu is on the brewery's site.

An evening out

The Pabst Theater Group runs the Pabst Theater, Riverside Theater, Miller High Life Theatre and Turner Hall Ballroom, among other venues, and lists upcoming events and box office information online (Pabst Theater Group). A single ticket to a concert or show is a classic first solo evening, because everyone is facing the stage.

Getting around

Milwaukee County Transit System lists the adult fare for riders aged 12 to 64 at $2.75 per ride. With fare capping you never pay more than $8.25 a day, and fares expire 90 minutes after scanning. Cash is still accepted but does not earn fare capping or transfers (MCTS, MCTS fares).

How to pace a first solo day

Pair one quiet room with one busy one. In the morning, take the Riverwalk to the Central Library or the Basilica tour. Eat at the Public Market around midday, when you can choose from several stands without committing to a table. Keep the evening for a seat in the dark at the Oriental or Downer, or a Thursday at the museum. Leaving after one stop is also a fine result, and none of these places asks you to stay for a set length of time.

Three first outings

  1. Easy: an hour in the Central Library, then lunch at the Public Market.
  2. Medium: a Thursday evening at the Milwaukee Art Museum, with a lakefront walk first.
  3. Bolder: a film at the Oriental Theatre, followed by dinner alone at the Lakefront beer hall.
