Things to Do Alone in Oakland

Oakland is easiest alone if you pick one anchor and let the day spread from it. Lake Merritt works: BART's Lake Merritt station is a short walk from the Oakland Museum of California, Chinatown and the lakeshore, and a Saturday market sits at the lake's north end. Some evening programmes are on a seasonal break, so check each listing.

Lake Merritt as your base

BART describes Lake Merritt Station (800 Madison Street) as near Oakland Chinatown, Laney College and the Oakland Museum of California. BART accepts Clipper or Tap and Ride, and you need a Clipper cash balance of at least $2.55 on a regular card to enter a station (BART station, BART fares).

LakeMerritt.org, a community site for the lake, describes a three-mile "Necklace of Lights" shoreline and says more than 100 species of resident or migratory birds are found there. It lists the gardens at the lake as open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 15:00 and Saturday and Sunday 8:00 to 16:00, a Lakeside Park Bird Walk on 25 November at 9:30, and informal weekend afternoon drum circles at the Pergola (LakeMerritt.org). A loop of the lake needs no ticket, and it is a good first thing to do alone.

The museum, with late Fridays

The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA), 1000 Oak Street, is open Wednesday to Sunday 11:00 to 17:00, open late on Fridays until 21:00, and closed Monday and Tuesday. Thursday After Hours is on a seasonal break and resumes in January 2027. It is also closed on 27 November. An adult ticket for ages 18 to 64 is $25, and admission to the galleries is free on the first Sunday of each month. OMCA offers Bloomberg Connects audio and video stories you can explore at your own pace, and a Lakeside entrance at 12th Street and Lake Merritt Boulevard (OMCA). Wandering at your own pace is exactly how a museum visit alone works best.

Saturday: market morning, theatre tour

Grand Lake Farmers Market is held every Saturday from 9am to 2pm, rain or shine, at Splash Pad Park. The organiser, the Agricultural Institute of Marin, lists more than 100 market participants and over 40 farmers. It accepts CalFresh EBT, Market Match and WIC, has an AIM booth where shoppers can leave bulk purchases, and asks that pets stay at home (Agricultural Institute of Marin).

The Paramount Theatre, 2025 Broadway, runs public guided tours on Saturdays. Listed dates include 5 December and several in January. Each tour lasts about 90 minutes, begins at 10:00 at the box office entrance on 21st Street near Broadway, and costs $10 for adults and $5 for ages 8 to 17, with ages 7 and under free. The theatre accepts cards only, and tour dates are subject to change (Paramount Theatre tours). A guided tour is a ready-made group where nobody expects you to bring a friend.

Heritage and the night sky

Oakland Heritage Alliance hosts lectures and walking tours. Its events page lists past walks in Oakland Chinatown, Dimond Park and Joaquin Miller Park; its in-person lectures and walks are announced on the events page. Check the calendar for the next walk.

Chabot Space & Science Center, 10000 Skyline Boulevard, is open Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00. Free telescope viewings run Friday and Saturday 19:30 to 22:30, and the centre is closed Monday to Thursday and on Thanksgiving (27 November). Adult admission is $24 and parking in the adjacent structure is free (Chabot). It is on the hills side of the city, so confirm how you will get there.

Fox Theater, 1807 Telegraph Avenue, shows live music; its home page lists shows such as Ali Siddiq on Saturday 19 December. Seeing a gig alone is an easy way to stand near others without needing to talk (Fox Oakland).

Jack London Square is a publicly accessible waterfront and marina area on the Oakland waterfront, according to its own site (Jack London Square). Visit Oakland's neighbourhood page for the Jack London District mentions Bay views, the ferry as public transit and a farmers' market (Visit Oakland). Walking the waterfront needs no plan, which suits an unhurried hour alone.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: Walk the lake shore for an hour and sit on a bench afterwards.
  2. Medium: On Saturday morning, go to the Grand Lake Farmers Market, then join a Saturday Paramount Theatre tour.
  3. Bolder: On a Friday evening, spend time at OMCA until 21:00, then stay for a free telescope viewing at Chabot on a Friday or Saturday night.
