Palm Springs suits a day on your own because most of it is paced by opening hours and a cable car, not by a group. Thursday evening is the easiest start: the Palm Springs Art Museum is free from 5pm to 8pm, and the rest of the week is gardens, a mountain tram and a small local history village.

Thursday night at the museum
The Palm Springs Art Museum is at 101 Museum Drive. It is open Thursday noon to 8pm, Friday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, and closed Monday to Wednesday. Regular adult admission is $25 and seniors (62+) pay $23, with free admission on Thursdays from 5:00 to 8:00 pm funded by the City of Palm Springs. (Palm Springs Art Museum). A gallery is a place where nobody expects company, so this is the gentlest first outing in town. For tips, see going to a museum alone.
Two more stops belong to the same museum:
- Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion. At 300 S Palm Canyon Drive, with the same Thursday to Sunday hours. Museum admission covers both sites (Palm Springs Art Museum).
- Aluminaire House. Free to see at 101 N. Museum Drive, from the outside only, because interior access is not permitted. It was first exhibited in 1931 and has since been donated to the museum (Aluminaire House).
Frey House II is listed as temporarily closed to regular visitors, so leave it off your plan.
A garden at walking speed
Moorten Botanical Garden in Palm Springs has season hours (1 October to 31 May) of 10am to 4pm, closed Wednesday, with adults at $7 (Moorten). A small garden is a good place to stay an hour and no more. The two bigger desert gardens are in Palm Desert and are covered under day trips below.
Up the mountain on a cable car
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway publishes winter hours from 5 October 2026 to 27 May 2027. Monday to Friday the first tram up is at 10:00 am; on Saturday, Sunday and holidays it is at 8:00 am. The last tram up is at 8:00 pm and the last down at 9:30 pm (Tramway hours). Adult tickets are listed at $36.95 including a $2 online fee, and a Ride 'n' Dine ticket after 4pm is listed at $45 for adults including dining in the Pines Café (Tramway tickets). Ride 'n' Dine gives you a reason to sit down at dinner on your own with a view.
A small history village and a cinema
- Village Green Heritage Center. The Palm Springs Historical Society runs the Cornelia White House, the McCallum Adobe (the town's oldest building) and Ruddy's General Store, and lists admission to the Cornelia White House as free. A free Village Green Tour can be reserved. Check the society's site for current museum hours (Palm Springs Historical Society).
- Cultural Center Cinema. Camelot Theatres runs the cinema at the Palm Springs Cultural Center and lists Foodie Fridays, a weekly farmers market, on Fridays from 5pm to 8pm (Camelot Theatres). A market stroll before a film is a simple solo evening; read how to go to the cinema alone.
Getting around without a car
SunLine's SunBus network has nine lines across the Coachella Valley. The listed adult fares are $1.00 for a single ride and $3.00 for a day pass, with transfers included (SunLine fares). A bus day pass suits a plan that jumps between the museum, downtown and the Village Green.
Day trips from Palm Springs
These are outside the city, so plan them as separate days.
- Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden, Palm Desert. Four acres with 14 outdoor sculptures and more than 60 desert plants, free and open every day from sunrise to sunset (Palm Springs Art Museum).
- The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, Palm Desert. Listed at $44.95 for adults (18+) and $34.95 for ages 3 to 17 (Living Desert). This one fills most of a day.
- Joshua Tree National Park. The park charges $30 for a private vehicle (7-day permit) (NPS fees). Its visitor center in Twentynine Palms is listed 8 am to 5 pm and Cottonwood Visitor Center 8:30 am to 4 pm (NPS visitor centers). That trip needs a car.
First solo outings
- Easy: Thursday, 5pm to 8pm, the free museum evening, then Aluminaire House.
- Medium: a morning at Moorten Botanical Garden, then a tram up in the afternoon.
- Bolder: a day trip to Joshua Tree, starting at the visitor center.
