Things to Do Alone in Las Vegas

Las Vegas works for one person once you stop treating the Strip as the whole city. Downtown has a neon museum and a history museum within a short drive of each other, and the desert starts less than an hour away. In November the weather suits it: this is the season when the parks are open for walking.

Downtown: a museum row you can do alone

Three small museums sit close to each other north of the Strip, and each has a built-in focus so you never have to make conversation.

The Neon Museum. The outdoor Neon Boneyard holds old signs from the city's history. September to May, it is open 3 pm to 11 pm, with the last entry at 10 pm, which makes it an afternoon-into-evening plan. Guided tours are an easy way in if you do not want to wander alone, and the museum says it runs in rain or shine, but not above set heat limits (Neon Museum).

The Mob Museum. On Stewart Avenue, this museum covers the history of organised crime. The site lists daily hours of 9 am to 9 pm, and it offers audio tours you can take at your own pace (The Mob Museum).

Las Vegas Natural History Museum. At 900 Las Vegas Boulevard North, this is a smaller, quieter stop, open daily 9 am to 4 pm. It is closed on Thanksgiving and on 25 December (Natural History Museum).

Nevada State Museum. On the Springs Preserve campus, west of downtown, it is open Thursday to Monday 9 am to 4 pm and closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day (Nevada State Museum).

Out of town: three desert edges

Winter is the time to go. Each of these parks has its own rule worth knowing before you set out.

Springs Preserve is the gentle option closer to town: 180 acres with trails and an 8-acre botanical garden. It is open Thursday to Monday 9 am to 4 pm, and the site asks you to buy tickets online in advance (Springs Preserve, tickets).

The November and December calendar

Dated events help most when you are alone, because someone else has done the planning.

DateEventWhereCost note
First Friday of every month, 6 to 10 pmArts District First Friday18b Arts DistrictFree to attend
Sat 5 Dec 2026, 7:30 pm; Sun 6 Dec, 2 pmA Very Vegas ChristmasLas Vegas PhilharmonicTickets via the Philharmonic

The 18b page describes First Friday as an art walk with over 100 local artists, food trucks and live music, free and running since 2002 (18b). Concert dates and the box office number are on the Philharmonic's site (Las Vegas Philharmonic). A seat at a concert is one of the easiest ways to spend an evening alone, because everyone faces the stage.

Free to watch on the Strip

If you do go to the Strip, make it a short stop for things that cost nothing to watch. The Fountains of Bellagio are described as free for any visitor. On weekdays the display runs every 30 minutes from 3 pm to 7:30 pm, then every 15 minutes from 8 pm to midnight; on weekends and holidays it starts at noon. The outdoor show can be cancelled for weather (Bellagio).

For something to do with your hands, the Pinball Hall of Fame at 4925 Las Vegas Boulevard South is a dedicated museum with pinball and nothing else (Pinball Hall of Fame). Check its site for current hours.

Three first outings

  1. Easy: an afternoon at the Natural History Museum, then a slow walk back through downtown.
  2. Medium: the Neon Museum on a guided tour, then First Friday in the Arts District if the date fits.
  3. Bolder: book a Red Rock timed-entry slot, arrive early and walk one trail on your own.
