Los Angeles looks like a city you need a car and a group for, but a lot of it works on your own with one tap card. Metro caps what you pay in a day, a public bus climbs to Griffith Observatory, and several of the biggest sights are free with a timed reservation. This page is organised around getting there, then around what is open late.

Pay once: how the Metro cap helps a solo day
LA Metro's fare page says a regular one-way ride is $1.75, you pay for three rides in one day and ride free after that, and you never pay more than $5 a day or $18 in seven days. Transfers within two hours are free when you tap to ride (round trips are not included). You can tap a credit or debit card, a phone wallet, a TAP card or the TAP app; cash works on buses only and the caps do not apply to cash (LA Metro fares).
That cap shapes a solo day. You can hop between three or four places without doing sums, and you can go home when you are tired, with no car to retrieve.
Up to the sky: Griffith Observatory
Griffith Observatory is a free-admission facility on the south side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. It is open Tuesday to Friday noon to 10pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 10pm, and closed on Mondays. The grounds are generally open the same hours as the park, 5:00am to 10:30pm daily, and the building is busiest on weekends and at sunset (Griffith Observatory).
You do not need a car. The Observatory's directions page says LADOT runs a daily DASH Observatory/Los Feliz bus from the Vermont/Sunset Metro station to the Observatory, 10am to 10pm, and it may be delayed by traffic (getting here). Trailheads on the grounds lead to Mount Hollywood, the Greek Theatre area and Fern Dell. A weekday afternoon is a calmer time to go than sunset on a Saturday.
Free rooms that need a reservation
- Getty Center, on its hill above Brentwood. Admission is free with a timed-entry reservation. It is open Tuesday to Friday and Sunday 10am to 6:30pm, Saturday 10am to 9pm, closed Monday. Some galleries are closed for renovation, and a photography exhibition, "Instante/revelacion: Moments in Mexican Photography", runs until 3 January 2027 (Getty Center).
- Getty Villa, Pacific Palisades. Also free with a timed reservation, open daily 10am to 5pm, closed Tuesday (Getty Villa).
- The Broad, on Grand Avenue. General admission is free, advance timed tickets are recommended and walk-ups are available daily. It is open until 8pm on Thursday and closed Monday. Its free mobile guide offers audio tours on your own phone. The Infinity Mirror Room is booked separately (The Broad).
A reservation is a solo advantage: you choose one slot for yourself and nobody else needs to agree on it. See the museum guide for how to pace a visit.
After dark: repertory cinema and screenings
The American Cinematheque shows 35mm, 70mm and digital films at the Egyptian Theatre, the Aero Theatre and Los Feliz 3, often with Q&As or introductions. Its admission policies list $13 general admission and $8 for members for regular-priced shows, plus a per-ticket online fee (American Cinematheque, admission policies).
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures sells screening tickets separately from museum entry: $10 general, $5 for matinees before 4pm. Museum entry is $25 for adults, with a reduced "Last Looks" price of $18 after 4:30pm, sold onsite only. It is open Wednesday to Monday 10am to 6pm (Academy Museum).
A single seat at a film is the easiest solo outing here. See cinema alone for how.
Downtown on foot
Downtown has a cluster you can link without a vehicle:
- Grand Central Market, 317 S Broadway. A landmark since 1917, open daily 8am to 9pm, with hours varying by vendor. The vendors listed on its site include a Oaxacan counter (La Sandunga), carnitas at Tacos Tumbras a Tomas, Ramen Hood and a bar-style Go Get Em Tiger cafe (Grand Central Market). Order at one counter and eat there. See eating alone.
- Central Library, 630 W 5th Street. Hours listed: Monday to Thursday 10am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday 9:30am to 5:30pm, Sunday 1pm to 5pm (LA Public Library). It gives you a warm, free place to sit out a rest hour.
- The Last Bookstore, 453 S Spring Street. Its site describes thousands of new, used and rare books with hidden rooms and installations (The Last Bookstore).
- El Pueblo de Los Angeles, the historic district with Olvera Street. The city's site lists free museums and exhibits (El Pueblo).
One ride to the ocean
The Santa Monica Pier's directions page says the Metro line runs from 7th/Metro Center to Downtown Santa Monica Station at 4th and Colorado, about 46 minutes, with trains every 10 minutes at peak, 12 off-peak and 20 early mornings and late nights (Pier directions). The Pier hosts a walking tour every Saturday and Sunday at 10am, and a free Locals' Night every third Thursday from September to May, which makes 19 November the next one (Pier happenings).
The Natural History Museum in Exposition Park is also on the E Line, which the museum suggests using on busy event days. It is open daily 9:30am to 5pm and closed the first Tuesday of every month (Natural History Museum).
First solo outings
- Easy: Metro or bus to Grand Central Market, one counter, one meal, then the Last Bookstore.
- Medium: a matinee at the Academy Museum or an evening show at the American Cinematheque.
- Bolder: the DASH bus to Griffith Observatory for a night of sky, or the train to the Santa Monica Pier for a Locals' Night.
