Mexico City is easiest alone if you build your week around its museums. Several keep late hours or free slots, Chapultepec has quiet corners where a person on a bench is normal, and the south of the city (Coyoacán and Xochimilco) rewards slow wandering with a market and a boat.

Thursday night is the solo night
Mexico City's museums do the work of a social plan for you: you arrive, there is a programme, and everyone is looking at the walls.
MUAC, Ciudad Universitaria. UNAM's contemporary art museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10:00 to 18:00, Thursday 10:00 to 20:00, Saturday 11:00 to 20:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 18:00; it is closed Monday. The museum lists general admission at MXN 60, free entry on Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00 and half price on Sunday. Ticket sales stop 30 minutes before closing (MUAC, checked 2026-11-01).
Museo Frida Kahlo (Casa Azul), Coyoacán. The museum is closed Monday and open Tuesday 10:00 to 18:00, Wednesday 11:00 to 18:00 and Thursday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00. On every Thursday "Noche Azul" runs 17:15 to 21:00, and on the last Wednesday of the month "Noche de Museos" runs 18:00 to 21:00. Tickets are sold through the official ticket site and a self-service kiosk at the museum shop (Museo Frida Kahlo, checked 2026-11-01). Book ahead and arrive with a ticket already on your phone, so you never have to explain a party of one.
Museo Anahuacalli, Coyoacán. Diego Rivera's museum of pre-Hispanic art is open Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 17:30 and closed Monday. It is a quiet, atmospheric building that suits slow looking (Museo Anahuacalli, checked 2026-11-01).
Free and low-friction galleries
Museo Jumex, Granada. Contemporary art with free admission, open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00, Saturday 10:00 to 19:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 17:00, closed Monday. Free guided visits run Tuesday to Friday at 12:00 and 16:00, which is a natural way to share a room without having to talk to anyone (Museo Jumex, checked 2026-11-01).
Museo Soumaya, Plaza Carso. Free entry; the Plaza Carso building is open daily 10:30 to 18:30 (Museo Soumaya, checked 2026-11-01).
MUNAL, Centro Histórico. The national art museum is on Tacuba 8, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:30, and closed on 1 January and 25 December (MUNAL, checked 2026-11-01).
Museo Nacional de Antropología, Chapultepec. The city's official guide lists it Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00, with eleven ground-floor galleries around a central courtyard (Mexico City visitor guide, checked 2026-11-01). Give it half a day and one wing at a time. For general tips, see how to visit a museum alone.
Universum, Ciudad Universitaria. The UNAM science museum is open Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 (ticket office closes at 16:00); general entry is listed at MXN 90 (Universum, checked 2026-11-01).
Chapultepec's quiet corners
Chapultepec is huge and busy at weekends, so pick a small target.
Audiorama de Chapultepec. In the first section, this open-air amphitheatre has coloured benches under old trees. The city's guide says the music changes by day of the week (jazz, classical, chill out, traditional Mexican) and that free book loans are usually offered. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00 (Mexico City visitor guide, checked 2026-11-01).
Jardín Botánico de Chapultepec. A 5.3-hectare garden inside the park, open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 16:00 with free entry. The guide notes it is not usually crowded, unlike parts of the first section at weekends (Mexico City visitor guide, checked 2026-11-01).
The south: market, boats and a film
Mercado de Coyoacán. On Ignacio Allende, in Del Carmen. The city's guide describes tostadas with a choice of toppings and independent craft stalls; many visitors come here after a museum. It is a good place to eat standing or at a counter with a single plate (Mexico City visitor guide, checked 2026-11-01). The same guide's food page lists tamales in the morning and tacos al pastor at night as classics of the city (delicias chilangas). More on this: how to eat alone in public.
Xochimilco canals. The city's guide says boat rides are priced per hour (MXN 500 per hour, typically for boats of up to 18 people) and that rules protect visitors, so confirm the price at the pier before boarding (Mexico City visitor guide, checked 2026-11-01). The Tren Ligero, which accepts the MI card, links to the Xochimilco piers (official guide). A group boat is a big first step; on a weekday, ask whether a smaller boat is available.
Cineteca Nacional. The national film archive runs three venues in the city, including the main site on Av. México Coyoacán 389 in Xoco; the city's guide says foreign films are shown subtitled, so many English-language screenings are possible (Cineteca Nacional, city guide). Check the online programme for times. See going to the cinema alone.
One bolder idea
Museo del Pulque y las Pulquerías, Colonia Guerrero. The official guide describes it as a museum above a working pulquería on Av. Hidalgo, at the Hidalgo Metro station. Pulque is a traditional drink, and a museum visit gives you context before you order (Mexico City visitor guide, checked 2026-11-01). Check opening days on the venue's site first.
Getting around alone
- Metro. The fare is MXN 5 and you can pay at the turnstile with a contactless bank card or phone, or with the MI card. Hours: Monday to Friday 05:00 to 24:00, Saturday 06:00 to 24:00, Sunday and holidays 07:00 to 24:00. The official guide says it is busiest 07:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 21:00, and that the first three cars are reserved for women and children under 12 (Metro guide, checked 2026-11-01).
- Cablebús Line 3. Links Chapultepec with Santa Fe and stops at Cineteca Chapultepec; the fare is listed at MXN 7, paid with the MI card (Cablebús guide).
- Ecobici. The city bike share lists a 1-day plan at MXN 134 with unlimited 45-minute trips (Ecobici). The city guide says registration is in the app with a Visa or Mastercard and a photo of an ID.
Safety notes from official advice
These come from government travel advice. The UK Foreign Office says political demonstrations are common in Mexico City and advises avoiding them, warns that unlicensed taxi drivers have robbed passengers (use "sitio" taxis from authorised ranks, or ask your hotel to order one), and advises being alert on public transport (FCDO). The Government of Canada also notes frequent demonstrations in Mexico City and advises awareness in busy tourist areas (Canada). The city's Metro guide adds: carry your bag in front and keep valuables out of back pockets.
First solo outings
- Easy. Audiorama de Chapultepec on a weekday morning: a bench, a free book if offered, no ordering.
- Medium. A Thursday evening at the MUAC, free from 18:00 to 20:00, then home by Metro before the late rush ends.
- Bold. Mercado de Coyoacán for a tostada, then the Frida Kahlo museum on its Thursday "Noche Azul" with a ticket booked ahead.
Solo Era (an iPhone app) has a solitude mission, level 3, worded "Spend a morning in a botanical garden or park with a notebook and no phone." It would fit the Jardín Botánico de Chapultepec well. Free to download. A subscription is required to start missions. Prices and any free trial are shown in the app and depend on the offer and eligibility.
Details change. Check the venue before you go.
