Rio is easiest alone if you let daylight set the plan: spend the middle of the day in downtown museums and libraries, several of which are free, and keep the garden, forest and viewpoints for mornings and afternoons. The city's own sites show that the best solo days here are built around a few well-run public places.

What the governments say about staying safe
The UK Foreign Office says robberies are common in many Brazilian cities, particularly on buses, and that thieves target mobile phones, particularly between 16:00 and 21:00. It advises not resisting an attacker, avoiding valuables on the beach and city beaches after dark, avoiding using a phone in the street and leaving your passport somewhere safe. It also advises avoiding all favelas, including tours marketed to tourists, and checking that a GPS route does not lead into one (FCDO). The Government of Canada says robberies can occur in all tourist areas of Rio, including Lapa, Santa Teresa and Copacabana beach, that thieves target people using phones and laptops, and that mass robberies ("arrastões") can happen at beaches, in traffic jams and in shopping centres. It recommends going into a nearby business or hotel to ask for directions if you are lost (Canada). Plan the walk between places before you leave, and keep your phone away between stops.
