San Diego works best alone when you build the day around things that happen on a schedule: a free organ concert on Sunday at 2pm, a ferry across the bay, and low tide at Point Loma. Each one gives you a reason to be somewhere and a natural end point, so nobody asks why you came by yourself.

Sunday at two: the organ
If you only plan one hour in San Diego, make it this one. The Spreckels Organ Society plays a concert every Sunday at 2pm, rain or shine, and the concerts are free and open to the public. They last about an hour and run all year (Spreckels Organ Society). You sit in the open-air pavilion in Balboa Park, you listen, and you leave when it ends. For seating, the society says it is first-come, first-served at the pavilion.
Getting there is easy to plan. The society says free parking is still available in the Lower Inspiration Point lot for up to three hours, with a free shuttle into the park, so one Sunday visit does not need a car park ticket.
If you want a first outing that asks nothing from you, this is it. A related generic guide is how to go to a museum alone, which works for the park's galleries too.
Balboa Park in small pieces
Balboa Park is a place to pick two or three small things, not a museum marathon.
- Botanical Building. The restored lath-house garden is listed as open daily from 10am to 4pm except on city holidays, and the project says it will stay free (Forever Balboa Park).
- Japanese Friendship Garden. Open daily 10am to 6pm, with last admission at 5pm. Check its early-closures page before you go (Japanese Friendship Garden).
- Timken Museum of Art. A small museum on El Prado, open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm and closed Monday and Tuesday. Free guided tours of the collection can be scheduled (Timken).
- San Diego Museum of Art. Check the site for hours. The exhibition "Forging a Legacy: 15 Years of Landmark Acquisitions" runs from 21 May 2026 to 31 May 2027 (SDMA).
- A public walking tour. General tours run Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11am from the Visitors Center, take 60 to 75 minutes, and need no pre-registration. A $5 donation is suggested (Balboa Park). A tour is a group of strangers by design, so you are not the only one on your own.
Some museums in the park offer free general admission on rotating days, but the park's page says this is for residents of the City and County of San Diego and active military (Balboa Park), so a visitor should not plan around it.
Across the bay for nine dollars
The Coronado ferry is the cheapest short boat trip in the city. Flagship's page lists Broadway Pier to Coronado as 15 minutes with departures every 60 minutes, at $9 one way. A second route runs from the Convention Center to Coronado every 30 minutes (Flagship Ferry). Take it over, walk, and come back on the next boat. The schedule does the planning, which is useful when you are alone.
Low tide at Point Loma
Cabrillo National Monument is open daily 9am to 5pm and is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The tidepool trail closes at 4:30pm, and the Bayside and Oceanside trails at 4pm (NPS hours). The park says the ideal time for the tidepools is fall and winter, when low tides fall inside opening hours; in spring and summer the tide often covers them while the park is open (NPS tidepools). That makes November a good month to go. The park asks you to tread carefully and never to remove animals or plants. An entrance fee applies; see the NPS fees page.
La Jolla: look first, swim only with a lifeguard
La Jolla Cove is a small beach between sandstone cliffs, described by the City of San Diego as ideal for swimmers, snorkelers and divers in the small summer surf. It sits inside an ecological reserve where fishing and removing objects are prohibited, and it is one of the nine beaches with permanent lifeguard stations patrolled by San Diego Lifeguards (City of San Diego).
A word on safety, from the city's own advice: swim near a lifeguard, never swim alone, and if you are caught in a rip current, swim sideways until free of it (City of San Diego lifeguards). Going to the Cove on your own is a good walk; going into the water is a decision to make at a lifeguard station, with other people nearby.
If you would rather stay dry, La Jolla has two indoor options. Birch Aquarium at Scripps (Birch Aquarium) and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego at 700 Prospect Street (MCASD); check each site for the day's hours. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve lists gates opening at 7:15am and closing at sunset, no dogs, and its page also carries closure notices, so read them before you drive up (California State Parks).
Markets, plazas and a screen
- Little Italy Mercato. A farmers market on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 1:30pm. The Wednesday market runs on three blocks from Kettner Boulevard to State Street (Little Italy). Buying one thing from one stall is a small, easy conversation.
- Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. The visitor center and select museums list 10am to 5pm and are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas (California State Parks). It is a plaza you can walk into without a booking.
- Digital Gym Cinema. An arthouse cinema at 1100 Market Street. General admission is listed at $13, students and seniors (55+) at $11, and matinees before 2pm at $10 (Digital Gym). See going to the cinema alone for how to do it.
First solo outings
- Easy: the Sunday organ concert at 2pm, then a slow walk through the Botanical Building before it closes at 4pm.
- Medium: the Coronado ferry out, a walk, and the next boat back.
- Bolder: a morning at the Point Loma tidepools on a weekday, then La Jolla Cove from the cliff path, with the swimming left to the lifeguard stations.

Yes. The Spreckels Organ Society says its Sunday concerts at 2pm are always free and open to the public, last about an hour, and happen rain or shine all year.
What is the best way to get to Coronado without a car?
The Flagship ferry runs from Broadway Pier in about 15 minutes, with departures every 60 minutes, and is listed at $9 one way. A second route leaves from the Convention Center every 30 minutes.
When are the tidepools at Cabrillo National Monument best?
The National Park Service says fall and winter, when low tides fall during opening hours. The tidepool trail closes at 4:30pm.

The City of San Diego lifeguards advise swimming near a lifeguard and never swimming alone. La Jolla Cove has a permanent lifeguard station, but check conditions with the lifeguards on the day.
