Scottsdale, Arizona suits solo visitors who like looking at things: galleries that open late on Thursdays, a canal lit by public art every November, and an architect's desert studio. It is a separate city from Phoenix with its own arts district, so plan it by evening and by theme, not by distance.
Thursday: the gallery night
On most Thursday evenings the galleries of the Old Town Arts District open late for ArtWalk. The Scottsdale Gallery Association gives the time as 7 to 9 p.m. and says the event brings together 28 galleries and two museums. It also runs several themed Gold Palette ArtWalk events per year (Scottsdale Gallery Association). The destination marketing board describes it as self-guided: you wander from gallery to gallery, meet artists and see an ever-changing mix of work (Experience Scottsdale). It is one of the easiest solo formats there is, since you walk in, look and leave when you like.
Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West, 3830 N. Marshall Way, is open Monday to Saturday 9:30 am to 5 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm. From November to April it has Extended Thursdays, open 9:30 am to 8 pm (Western Spirit). Combine it with ArtWalk: museum first, then galleries.
Canal Convergence, the November light show
Canal Convergence is an annual light-art event at the Scottsdale Waterfront, 7135 E. Camelback Road. The 2026 edition has the theme Western Nature and, per Experience Scottsdale, runs 6 to 15 November with free admission, light-based public art, workshops and activities; see the listing for evening times (Experience Scottsdale). Public art in the dark is a gentle first outing alone, because everyone is looking at the installations and not at each other.
An architect's desert home
Taliesin West was Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and studio in the Sonoran Desert. From 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027 the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation lists it as open daily, with the first audio tour at 10 a.m. and the last entrance at 3:45 p.m. In the regular season (October to May) adults pay $44. The self-guided audio tour takes 60 to 75 minutes, partly indoors and partly outdoors, and tickets are limited (Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation). Reservations are strongly recommended (Taliesin West). The audio tour lets you move at your own speed.
Desert trails and a butterfly house
- McDowell Sonoran Preserve covers more than 30,500 acres with over 230 miles of multi-use trails. Its hiking advice includes bringing ample water, turning around when half of it is gone, and checking the hourly forecast first (Scottsdale Preserve). See also solo hiking safety.
- Butterfly Wonderland is an indoor butterfly conservatory; its site shows the day's hours, so check them before you go (Butterfly Wonderland). An indoor option for a windy or wet day.
Free art and a quiet library
- Scottsdale Public Art keeps an interactive map of works around the city. In Old Town it lists, for example, Freedom at 3806 N. Drinkwater Boulevard and Don Quixote at 3939 N. Drinkwater Boulevard (Scottsdale Public Art). A loose walk between two or three works needs no ticket and no plan.
- Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Boulevard, lists building hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday (Scottsdale Public Library). It sits a short walk from those works and is a calm place to sit between outings.
Saturday market, then dinner at home
The Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market is a Saturday market that has run since 2009. The City of Scottsdale says it moves to the City Hall surface lot at 75th Street and Bennie Gonzales Way from the 2026-27 season (City of Scottsdale). Check opening hours before you go. Buying ingredients and cooking them for yourself afterwards is a calm Saturday.
How to plan a solo art week
Scottsdale's calendar rewards a loose plan. Thursday is the anchor: Western Spirit stays open until 8 pm, then ArtWalk starts at 7 p.m. in the galleries nearby, so you can see one museum and a few galleries in a single evening. Canal Convergence is a different mood: light installations at the Waterfront each November. Taliesin West and the preserve are daytime outings, and the first audio tour starts at 10 a.m. Spread them over several days instead of stacking them. If you want to talk to someone, ArtWalk is the format where it is expected: Experience Scottsdale says you can meet local artists, and a gallery question about one work is an easy opening. Read how to visit a museum alone for the pace.
Getting around
The City of Scottsdale describes its trolley as three fare-free circulator routes that connect to Valley Metro and the Tempe Orbit (Scottsdale transit). Route maps are on that page. For Phoenix next door, see things to do alone in Phoenix.
