Tucson, Arizona is a good city to try alone because the basics are cheap. Sun Tran's website says all of its transit rides are fare free, the university art museum charges nothing, and the food culture is built around ordering at a counter. Plan one theme per day and let the streetcar and buses carry you.
Ride without a ticket
Sun Tran's fares page states: "All Transit Rides are Free." It covers Sun Tran, Sun Link, Sun Van, Sun On Demand, Sun Express and Sun Shuttle, and says the arrangement continues at the direction of the Mayor and Council (Sun Tran). That removes the first barrier for a solo visitor: no ticket machine and no fare to work out. Route and schedule planning is on the same site. For a wider plan see things to do alone in a new city.
Eat like a UNESCO city
Visit Tucson says UNESCO designated Tucson the first Creative City of Gastronomy in the United States in 2015, citing a food story that reaches back more than 4,000 years to native crops such as tepary beans, chiles, squash and corn. It also names Sonoran hot dogs and Oaxacan mole among the Mexican dishes to look for, and points to farmers markets for local ingredients (City of Gastronomy, Mexican food). A counter order for one is a normal way to eat here. Read how to eat alone in public first.
Heritage you can visit alone
- Tucson's Birthplace Mission Garden, at the foot of Sentinel Peak. It lists Wednesday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. from October to March (Mission Garden). A quiet garden is a gentle start.
- San Xavier del Bac Mission, 1950 W. San Xavier Road, is on tribal land and follows tribal regulations. The church is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, the museum and mausoleum 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and free docent-led tours run every day except Sunday. The church has no heating or air conditioning, so the mission asks winter visitors to dress warmly (San Xavier del Bac).
Rooms for art and film
- University of Arizona Museum of Art is open Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Monday, Sunday and holidays, and admission is free to all visitors (UAMA).
- Tucson Museum of Art lists Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (Tucson Museum of Art).
- The Loft Cinema is an independent cinema with daily showtimes. The box office opens half an hour before the first screening, online orders carry a $1.50 per ticket service fee, and in-person purchases have none. Matinees are screenings before 4 pm Monday to Thursday and the first showtime of the day Friday to Sunday (Loft Cinema, ticket prices). Its series include a Silver Screen Reading Club and Mondo Mondays. A film alone is easy: see going to the cinema alone.
Gardens and a desert walk
- Tucson Botanical Gardens are open daily 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with gates closing at 4:15 pm. Yume Japanese Gardens are open Tuesday to Sunday 9:30 am to 3 pm and Edna's Eatery 8:30 am to 3 pm. They close on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 1 January and 4 July. The garden ticket is $20 for adults (Tucson Botanical Gardens).
- Tohono Chul lists grounds hours of 8 am to 5 pm daily, adults $20, and closures on New Year's Day, 4 July, Thanksgiving and Christmas (Tohono Chul).
- Saguaro National Park requires an entrance pass. The park does not accept cash, so plan to pay by card (National Park Service). Check the park's current hours before you set off.
A big-sky afternoon
Pima Air & Space Museum, 6000 E. Valencia Road, lists operating hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, with last admittance at 1:30 p.m. (Pima Air & Space Museum). It is large, so give it a few hours and no schedule.
First solo outings
- Easy: Ride a Sun Link or Sun Tran service for one stop and sit in the Mission Garden on a Wednesday to Sunday morning.
- Medium: Spend a Tuesday to Saturday afternoon in the free University of Arizona Museum of Art, then see what is on at the Loft.
- Bold: Visit San Xavier del Bac Mission on a weekday, join the free docent-led tour and find a Sonoran hot dog afterwards.
