Spokane has a rare thing for a solo day: a waterfall that runs through the middle of downtown, so the first thing to do alone needs no ticket and no plan. Visit Spokane calls the Spokane Falls the largest urban waterfall in the nation, and the park around it, Riverfront Park, was built for Expo '74. This page starts at the river, then moves to the rooms and stages that make a November evening easy to spend on your own.

Start at the water: Riverfront Park and the falls
Riverfront Park covers about 100 acres in downtown Spokane and was the site of the 1974 World's Fair. The Spokane River winds through it and drops over basalt and two dams; Visit Spokane lists the Great Northern Clocktower (finished in 1902), the Looff Carrousel, the Numerica Skyride and a footbridge to the island called snxw meneɂ among the stops (Visit Spokane: Riverfront Park).
For the falls themselves, Visit Spokane suggests three easy viewpoints: Huntington Park next to the lower falls, the pedestrian suspension bridges near the Washington Water Power building on the north side of the park, and the overlook at the north end of the Monroe Street Bridge. The Numerica Skyride is described as a 15-minute round trip in an all-weather enclosed cabin, which makes it a reasonable choice on a gray day (Visit Spokane: Spokane Falls, free things to do).
In winter Visit Spokane points to the Numerica Skate Ribbon, an ice path 16 feet wide and 650 feet long with a pond attached, and mentions DJ Nights on the Ice on Fridays. Check Riverfront Park for opening dates and reservations before you go (Visit Spokane: winter events).
A long walk on the Centennial Trail
The Spokane River Centennial Trail is a 40-mile paved path from Nine Mile Falls through downtown to the Idaho line. The Friends of the Centennial Trail say a temporary detour near Mission Park runs until early December, and that portions in the Riverside State Park area remain closed after the Spokane Complex fires, so check the trail updates page before choosing a stretch (Friends of the Centennial Trail). A short out-and-back from Riverfront Park is a calm way to try a trail alone.
Gardens that cost nothing: Manito Park
Manito Park, on the South Hill, is free and open to the public throughout, according to the Friends of Manito, which describe 98 acres with the Nishinomiya-Tsutakawa Japanese Garden, Duncan Garden, Rose Hill, Lilac Garden and Ferris Perennial Garden. The Gaiser Conservatory displays orchids, other flowering plants and succulents and cacti, and the Park Bench Cafe is open in season (Friends of Manito). Visit Spokane's museum and garden page describes the conservatory as a mix of desert and tropical plants (Visit Spokane). Conservatory hours are not stated there, so check before a winter visit.
Rooms and stages
- Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (the MAC), 2316 West 1st Avenue, Browne's Addition. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, and 10am to 8pm on the last Wednesday of the month. On that evening MAC After Hours has half-price admission from 5pm with gallery talks, workshops and live music. Adult admission is listed at $15, the Campbell House visit is included, parking in the garage is free, and the Museums for All program offers $5 admission with a SNAP EBT or WIC card. The MAC Cafe is temporarily closed for remodeling (MAC: plan your visit). See the museum guide for pacing a visit.
- Bing Crosby Theater. Presents itself as Spokane's theater for exceptional performances since 1915, with a calendar of concerts, talks and shows on its site (Bing Crosby Theater). Single seats are easy at a concert.
- Spokane Civic Theatre. A community theatre founded in 1947 on downtown's North Bank, with two performance spaces and a Season 79 of nine productions for 2026-2027 (Spokane Civic Theatre).
- A night of dancing. Visit Spokane's live entertainment page names Zola and nYne as good choices when you want food, drinks and a night of dancing (Visit Spokane: live entertainment). Check each venue's own page for age rules and any cover charge.
Saturday food at the farmers' market
The Spokane Farmers' Market is food focused, held at 2nd and Chestnut in Coeur d'Alene Park, Browne's Addition. Its site lists the Saturday market at 10am to 1pm in November, with the Holiday Market Saturday falling on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the last market of the season. The Wednesday farmstand is closed for the season. The market accepts SNAP/EBT (Spokane Farmers' Market). Buying one thing from a stall and eating it on a bench is an easy first solo outing. For tips, see how to eat alone in public.
First solo outings
- Easy: walk to Huntington Park and the Monroe Street Bridge overlook for the falls, then take the Skyride.
- Medium: a morning at Manito Park with the Gaiser Conservatory, then an afternoon at the MAC.
- Bolder: a show at the Bing Crosby Theater or Spokane Civic Theatre, or a night out dancing.
