Things to Do Alone in San Francisco

San Francisco is easiest alone if you build the week around Thursday. Two big science museums, the California Academy of Sciences and the Exploratorium, open in the evening for adults only, and both are designed so that strangers talk to each other. The rest of the days work around that: a boat across the bay, a market hall by the water, and gardens and cliffs on the west side.

Thursday is the solo night

Most cities have a late museum night once a month. San Francisco has one every week, and two of them are pitched at adults who turn up on their own.

Exploratorium After Dark is at Pier 15 on the Embarcadero. It runs every Thursday from 6 to 10 pm, is adults only (18+), and the museum describes it as a night with art lounges, trivia, dance parties, performances and talks, plus more than 650 hands-on exhibits. The museum's own wording invites you to talk to strangers, which makes it a fair place to be the person who came alone (Exploratorium After Dark, last checked 2026-11-01).

California Academy of Sciences NightLife takes place in Golden Gate Park on Thursdays from 6 to 10 pm, with last entry at 9 pm. It is 21+ and you need a valid physical photo ID. Most Thursdays have an event; usually one a month does not, and NightLife pauses from mid-December to early January. The page gives the ticket price as $26 (California Academy of Sciences: NightLife, last checked 2026-11-01).

SFMOMA in SoMa keeps a long Thursday as well: noon to 8 pm, against 10 am to 5 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Friday to Sunday. It is closed Wednesday, and on Thanksgiving and Christmas (SFMOMA: Visit, last checked 2026-11-01). If a loud science night is too much for a first outing, an art museum on an early Thursday evening is quieter. For museum habits that make it easier, see how to go to a museum alone.

Muni, cable cars and the ticket you buy first

San Francisco is hilly, and the transit system, Muni, is the practical way to cover it. The SFMTA lists a single adult ride at $2.85 (valid for 120 minutes) when paid with Clipper, MuniMobile or a credit or debit card, and a day pass at $5.70 for buses, trains and historic streetcars. You can tap a chip-enabled card or phone directly (SFMTA: Fares, last checked 2026-11-01).

Cable cars have a quirk for first-timers. There are three lines, two from Powell and Market and one from California and Market. At Powell and Market, Bay and Taylor, and Hyde and Beach you must buy your fare in advance between 8 am and 8 pm, so use MuniMobile or Clipper before you reach the front of the line (SFMTA: Cable Cars, last checked 2026-11-01). Doing this on your phone while you wait is the easiest way not to hold up a queue alone.

A ferry from the Ferry Building

The Ferry Building sits at the foot of Market Street on the Embarcadero. It is open daily from 6 am to 10 pm, though individual businesses keep their own hours (Ferry Building Marketplace: Visit, last checked 2026-11-01). The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market runs all year on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm and on Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm (Farmers Market, last checked 2026-11-01). Eating something at a hall counter and then walking along the water needs no plan.

From here Golden Gate Ferry sails to Sausalito, Tiburon, Larkspur and Angel Island. The operator says the boats have indoor and outdoor seating and views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the skyline. The adult one-way fare to Sausalito is $8.50 with Clipper or a contactless bank card, and $14.00 for a paper ticket. Read the live timetable before choosing a return sailing (Golden Gate Ferry: Riding the ferry, fares, last checked 2026-11-01). Taking a boat for a coffee in another town is the same idea as a bus to the next town, only prettier. For more of that, see things to do alone in a new city.

West side: glass, tea and cliffs

The Golden Gate Park gardens are the calm part of the city, and several close at the end of the afternoon, so plan for daylight.

Conservatory of Flowers. A glasshouse in Golden Gate Park, open 10 am to 4:30 pm with last entry at 4 pm, and closed on Wednesdays. The first Tuesday of the month is a free day. After sunset every night there is a free light show, Photosynthesis, which starts 30 minutes after sunset and lasts about half an hour (Gardens of Golden Gate Park, last checked 2026-11-01).

Japanese Tea Garden. In Golden Gate Park, open every day. Winter hours are 9 am to 4:45 pm, and the entry gate closes at 4:30 pm (Japanese Tea Garden, last checked 2026-11-01).

Lands End. The northwestern corner of the city has a trail on the cliffs above the ocean, with a view of the Golden Gate from the Legion of Honor overlook and a memorial to the USS San Francisco. The National Park Service asks hikers to stay on the trails and keep their distance from the cliff edges (NPS: Lands End, last checked 2026-11-01).

The Presidio. The Presidio Trust lists trails, picnic spots and views of the bridge, and a free Presidio GO Shuttle to get around (Presidio, last checked 2026-11-01). Its Mess Hall is a casual place to eat on your own.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: Walk into the Ferry Building in the morning, have something at a counter, then stand at the water for ten minutes.
  2. Medium: Take the Sausalito ferry out and back in daylight.
  3. Bold: Go to a Thursday night at the Exploratorium on your own, or to NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences if you are 21 or over. Give yourself one hour and leave when you want.
