Things to Do Alone in Santa Fe

Santa Fe, New Mexico is a small, walkable city whose best solo outings are quiet rooms and a good market. In November the museums work on winter hours, and the first and final Fridays of the month add early-evening openings, so the easiest plan is to build a day around a museum, a park walk and one meal where nobody expects you to talk.

Start with the Friday evenings

Two museums treat the first Friday of the month as an early-evening occasion. The New Mexico Museum of Art has two buildings and one ticket: the historic Plaza Building at 107 West Palace Avenue and the Vladem Contemporary in the Railyard Arts District at 404 Montezuma. From November to April both are open 10am to 5pm Sunday and Tuesday to Saturday, and closed Mondays. The Plaza Building is open 5 to 7pm on the first Friday of each month and the Vladem Contemporary 5 to 7pm on the final Friday of each month; the museum's site says all guests are admitted free in those evening hours. Winter weather can close the museum, so call the front desk if the forecast is bad (New Mexico Museum of Art).

The New Mexico History Museum opens 10am to 7pm on the first Friday of the month, with free admission from 5 to 7pm. On other days a one-day visit is $7 for New Mexico residents and $12 for non-residents, and it is closed on 1 January, Thanksgiving and Christmas (New Mexico History Museum). A free evening hour is a low-pressure way to see one gallery and leave. Read how to visit a museum alone for pacing ideas.

A second museum day

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum lists its Santa Fe galleries as open daily from 10am to 5pm (O'Keeffe Museum). For something wider, the Museum of International Folk Art on Museum Hill charges $7 for New Mexico adults and $12 for non-residents, is free for New Mexico residents on the first Sunday of the month with ID, and closes on Thanksgiving, 25 December and 1 January. The museum asks visitors to call and confirm days and hours before they go (Museum of International Folk Art).

Outside: garden and Railyard

The Santa Fe Botanical Garden charges $16 for adults and $8 for youth aged 4 to 17, and is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. From November the hours are 10am to 4pm, with last entry 30 minutes before closing; the site lists both seven days and Wednesday to Sunday for the winter months, so confirm the day before you travel (Santa Fe Botanical Garden).

Railyard Park, at 740 Cerrillos Road, is open 6am to 10pm daily (Railyard Park Conservancy). It sits in the same district as the Vladem Contemporary, so a gallery visit and a lap of the park fit into one outing.

Saturday at the market

The Santa Fe Farmers' Market (1607 Paseo de Peralta) is open on Saturdays all year, 8am to 1pm. Its Tuesday market runs until 22 December 2026, also 8am to 1pm (Santa Fe Farmers' Market). A market gives you something to do with your hands and an easy reason to start a conversation with a grower. See how to eat alone in public if you plan to build a lunch from it.

The market's own page also lists a Railyard Artisan Market on Sundays from 10am to 3pm in the Farmers' Market Pavilion; check the market calendar for its winter schedule.

One bold afternoon

Meow Wolf Santa Fe and its House of Eternal Return describes "85+ rooms" of immersive worlds, including The Caves and Fancy Town (Meow Wolf Santa Fe). It needs no table and no conversation, which makes it a practical solo outing; check opening times and tickets on the site.

Getting around

Santa Fe Trails buses cost $1 one way and $2 for an adult day pass (age 19 and older), and riders aged 18 and under travel free. Rail Runner passengers and transfers from the North Central Regional Transit District ride free with a transfer or ticket (City of Santa Fe Transit).
