Things to Do Alone in Sacramento

Sacramento is a state capital with a historic river district, and both make easy company for one person: a railroad museum open daily, a Capitol you can tour for free on weekdays, and an art museum that stays open until 9pm on Thursdays. The rest of this guide follows rails and river, then ends with the train out.

Old Sacramento: history on the river

The Old Sacramento Waterfront describes a national historic landmark district with over 125 shopping, dining, events and attractions, plus riverboats, railroad excursions, horse-drawn carriages and riverside bike treks (Old Sacramento Waterfront).

California State Railroad Museum is open daily 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30 (railroad museum). A train museum has a built-in focus for the eye, which makes it easy to stay for as long or as short as you like.

Third Thursdays happen on the third Thursday of every month from 16:00 to 20:00: live demonstrations, open studios, creative workshops and after-hours shopping among local artists and makers. (Third Thursdays).

Sacramento History Museum in Old Sacramento is open seven days a week from 10:00 to 17:00, with last tickets sold at 16:30, and it runs the Old Sacramento Underground Tours (Sacramento History Museum).

For evenings, the district's events calendar lists live comedy at Haus of Comedy (921 Front Street), Laughs Unlimited (1207 Front Street) and the Geery Theater. One listing calls its monthly standup showcase "perfect for a date night out, solo night out, or night out with friends" (Old Sacramento events). Check the calendar for the night you want.

Government and gardens

The California State Capitol Museum, 1315 10th Street, is free to visit. Its weekday hours are 9:00 to 17:00. The Capitol is closed on weekends and most holidays, so call the Tour Office at 916-324-0333 with questions. It offers free guided and self-guided tours. Capitol Park, 40 acres around the building, stays open daily and has free guided tours, trees from around the world and the World Peace Rose Garden (visit, tours).

Art with a late night

The Crocker Art Museum, 216 O Street, is closed Monday and Tuesday, open 10:00 to 17:00 Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and open 10:00 to 21:00 on Thursday. Admission: adults $15, seniors $10, college students $10, youth 6 to 17 $8, children 5 and under free. Packed lunches and snacks are not allowed inside, but closed water bottles are, and there are picnic tables in Crocker Park across the street (Crocker). Thursday evening is the quieter slot for a first museum visit alone.

Weekday and weekend: how to split your days

Sacramento's opening hours push you toward a simple split. Weekdays are for the Capitol, which is closed on weekends, and for the Crocker, which is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Weekends and Wednesday to Friday evenings suit Old Sacramento, where the railroad museum is open every day and Third Thursdays and the comedy listings add evening options. Two practical habits help when you are on your own: choose one anchor per day (a museum, a tour, or an event), and let the rest stay loose. A tour at the Capitol or a workshop at Third Thursdays hands you a group and a schedule, so you never have to start a conversation from nothing, and a ticket, a time and a meeting point replace the question of what to do next; asking the guide or a maker a single question about what you are looking at is enough.

Getting around, and out

SacRT's news page says the ZipPass app has retired and riders must now use Transit Connect, the agency's mobile fare app, and that its Tap2Ride contactless payment is expanding to light rail stations (SacRT).

Capitol Corridor has 18 stations between San Jose and Placer County. Sacramento (SAC), Oakland Jack London (OKJ) and San Jose-Diridon (SJC) are all on its list. It notes a temporary service disruption at Oakland Coliseum station from 26 October 2026 to 1 January 2027, which is worth checking before you book (stations, Capitol Corridor). That makes Oakland and San Jose simple single-day trips. See how to eat alone in public for lunch on the way.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: Walk Capitol Park on a weekday and tour the Capitol Museum.
  2. Medium: Go to the railroad museum, then stay for Third Thursdays if it is the third Thursday of the month.
  3. Bolder: Book a Capitol Corridor train to Oakland or San Jose for a day trip, and travel back the same evening.
