Things to Do Alone in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is easiest alone if you build your week around Wednesday. Two big museums stay open late that night, the art museum is free on the first Wednesday of the month, and the light-rail network gets you there without a car. Add a Saturday winter market that runs until 17 April and you have a full, low-pressure week.

Build the week around Wednesday

Pair the two museums across one week, or on one Wednesday if you start early.

If you want a pace for a big building, read how to visit a museum alone.

Get around without a car

UTA TRAX runs three lines: the Blue Line from Draper to Salt Lake City, the Red Line from South Jordan to the University of Utah, and the Green Line from West Valley to the Salt Lake International Airport (UTA TRAX).

For the mountains, UTA's Ski Bus links the city to Solitude and Brighton, Snowbird and Alta, Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Sundance. Service runs seasonally with each resort's opening and closing dates, typically beginning in late November or early December and ending in late March or April. Each one-way trip is $5, payable with the Transit app, a pass or exact change on the bus (UTA Ski Service). Check the page before you plan, because the start date depends on the resorts.

Saturdays: the winter market

The Downtown Farmers Market is at Pioneer Park in summer. Its winter market runs from 14 November 2026 to 17 April 2027, Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, at 209 E 500 S (Downtown Farmers Market). A market works well alone: you can stroll, buy one thing, and leave when you want. Read how to eat alone in public if you plan to turn it into lunch.

Quiet rooms and odd corners

A walk near downtown

Lower City Creek Natural Area surrounds Memory Grove Park. The city lists a 0.5-mile off-leash trail (the Freedom Trail) and a 2.6-mile hiking trail (the Lower City Creek Loop) (SLC Public Lands). It gives you a clear route and a clear end point.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: On a Wednesday evening, spend an hour in the Main Library, then walk out into the city.
  2. Medium: Go to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on a free first Wednesday of the month and stay for the late hours until 8pm.
  3. Bold: On a Saturday between mid-November and April, go to the winter market, then spend the afternoon at the Natural History Museum, which is open until 5pm.
