Boise suits going alone because the river does the planning for you. The Boise River Greenbelt is a 29-mile path through the middle of the city, and the museums, library and market on this page give you reasons to leave it. November adds a late First Thursday at the art museum and a Saturday market that runs until 19 December.
Walk the Greenbelt first
The City of Boise describes the Boise River Greenbelt as one of Boise's most beloved parks: a 29-mile tree-lined pathway following the north and south sides of the river, with scenic views, wildlife habitat and access to many riverside parks (City of Boise). You can walk ten minutes or three hours. That is the point for a first solo outing.
The city's page also carries a safety note. The Boise Police Department says walking, running or riding on the Greenbelt at night is permitted but recommends well-lit, visible routes, avoiding isolated areas and staying aware of your surroundings (same page).
For hills instead of river, Ridge to Rivers publishes an interactive trail map and current trail condition reports (Ridge to Rivers). The City of Boise also says the Cartwright Ridge Trailhead parking lot is closed through spring 2027 for an enhancement project (Boise Parks and Recreation), so check which trailhead you plan to use.
A late evening at the art museum
The Boise Art Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday noon to 5pm, and closed on Mondays. On the first Thursday it stays open until 7pm. The museum has described First Thursday admission as "pay what you can" on its page (Boise Art Museum). Read how to visit a museum alone if you want a pace for the galleries.
The Basque Block
The Basque Museum and Cultural Center tells the story of Basques in the American West, and its site has a page for the Basque Block. It is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 11am to 3pm, and closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays. The museum lists self-guided tours of the restored boardinghouse on Saturdays, pending volunteers (Basque Museum). A small museum is easier than a big one for a first solo visit: you can see it in a short stop.
Library, garden and Saturday market
- Boise Public Library, Downtown Library, 715 S. Capitol Blvd. Open Monday to Thursday 10am to 8pm, Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm, closed Sunday. The library's news notes that the downtown library closes from 5 to 11 December, with the first floor reopening Saturday 12 December (Boise Public Library).
- Idaho Botanical Garden, 2355 Old Penitentiary Road. Open Monday to Sunday 9am to 5pm, with last admission at 4pm. Its events menu lists Winter Garden aGlow; check the dates there. The garden's parking lot is temporarily closed, with parking at the Table Rock Trailhead behind the Warden's House (Idaho Botanical Garden).
- Capital City Public Market, at The Grove Plaza, 827 W Main Street. Every Saturday from 11 April to 19 December, 10am to 2pm (Capital City Public Market). Read how to eat alone in public before you order lunch.
Julia Davis Park
Julia Davis Park, 700 S. Capitol Boulevard, is described by the City of Boise as the city's oldest park. The city lists a Rose Garden, a Solar System Trail, a bandshell and the Window to the River Memorial among its features, and gives its hours as sunrise to midnight (City of Boise). It sits a short walk from the Downtown Library, so the two pair well on one afternoon.
What it costs
Several of the places above publish adult prices. The Boise Art Museum lists general admission at $9 and the Basque Museum adult admission at $7. The Idaho Botanical Garden lists adults at $15, with members and children 3 and under always free. The Greenbelt is a public pathway, and the library and market are places you can visit without a ticket. A day that mixes one paid stop with the free ones keeps the budget low and the pressure lower.
Getting around
Valley Regional Transit lists a $1.50 single ride and a $2.50 all-day pass for adults (Valley Regional Transit).
First solo outings
- Easy: Walk part of the Greenbelt in daylight, then spend an hour at the Downtown Library.
- Medium: Visit the Boise Art Museum on a First Thursday and stay until the 7pm close.
- Bold: On a Saturday, walk the Greenbelt to Julia Davis Park, then cross to the Basque Block and finish at the Capital City Public Market.
