Buffalo works well for one person because its best rooms are quiet ones: galleries that stay open late, a historic house you enter with a guided tour, a cinema from 1920 and a lakeside waterfront. Here is how to build a solo day or evening around them in November.

Two art museums, two late nights
Buffalo AKG Art Museum. The museum is open Monday and Thursday 10 am to 5 pm, Friday 10 am to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10 am to 5 pm. It is closed Tuesday, Wednesday and on Thanksgiving. On M&T First Fridays it stays open until 9 pm. The museum suggests allowing at least two hours. The Knox Building has Cornelia, which serves morning pastries, coffee and tea, lunch, Friday night service and Sunday brunch, so a coffee at your own table is built into the visit. The AKG also lists adult studio art classes (Buffalo AKG hours, Buffalo AKG).
Burchfield Penney Art Center. At 1300 Elmwood Avenue on the Buffalo State campus, it has 16 galleries. It is open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 5 pm and Thursday 10 am to 8 pm, and closed Monday and Tuesday. On the second Friday of every month, admission is free and the centre stays open until 8 pm with music, workshops and more. ROUX Soup Bar and Cafe inside serves Wednesday to Saturday, 11 am to 3 pm. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day (Burchfield Penney).
If museums feel like a lot, how to visit a museum alone has a short starter routine.
Architecture you can step into
Martin House. Frank Lloyd Wright designed this estate for Darwin D. Martin in 1903 to 1905. The pergola, conservatory and carriage house were rebuilt in a reconstruction of Wright buildings. To see the interior, you must purchase a tour, which is a good format alone because a guide sets the pace (Martin House). Check the site for tour times.
Kleinhans Music Hall. The Saarinen-designed National Historic Landmark is a concert venue whose events are sold through the BPO Box Office, the only official ticket provider. Sit in a single seat for a concert and you are facing the stage like everyone else (Kleinhans).
Explore Buffalo. The volunteer-driven nonprofit says its docents lead more than 2,000 tours of landmarks and neighbourhoods each year, and it posts a tour calendar. A walking tour is a ready-made group where nobody expects you to know anyone. An Explorer Pass membership covers a year of free walking and bike tours (Explore Buffalo).
The waterfront and the glasshouse
Buffalo Waterfront. Canalside and the Outer Harbor are open to the public daily from dawn to dusk, with free parking. It is a simple loop for a first outing: walk, sit, leave when you like (Buffalo Waterfront).
Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. Open daily from 10 am to 4 pm, with last entry at 3:30 pm. The site lists classes and workshops and a Feed the Fish activity, which gives you something to do with your hands (Botanical Gardens).
Buffalo History Museum. At 1 Museum Court in Buffalo, the museum is the city's local-history stop, and a quiet one for a solo visit. Opening days and hours are on its visit page, so check the site before you go (Buffalo History Museum).
A cinema from 1920
The North Park Theatre opened on 21 November 1920 and was hailed as "Buffalo's Finest Neighborhood Theatre". Its neoclassical foyer and auditorium were designed by Henry Spann, and the walls carry six Art Nouveau murals by Raphael Beck. Its site lists showtimes, and the theatre promotes cult and classic screenings (North Park Theatre). A film is one of the easiest things to do alone because no one talks during it. See cinema alone if you want tips.
How to start in Buffalo
- Pick the format that asks the least of you: a museum on a late night, then a coffee at Cornelia or ROUX.
- Choose one structured activity: a docent-led walking tour or a Martin House tour.
- Keep the waterfront for a day without a plan, because it is open from dawn to dusk.
Three first outings
- Easy: an afternoon at the Botanical Gardens, open until 4 pm.
- Medium: a Thursday evening at the Burchfield Penney (open until 8 pm), with soup at ROUX earlier in the day.
- Bolder: a Martin House tour on your own, then a film at the North Park Theatre.
