Things to Do Alone in Cleveland

In November it gets dark early in Cleveland, so the useful question is what stays open into the evening. Several museums here do: the Cleveland Museum of Art, with free general admission, is open to 9 pm on Wednesday and Friday, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame until 9 pm on Thursday and the Great Lakes Science Center until 8 pm on Thursday. This guide goes through them, plus a library, a market and a cinema.

Last checked 2026-11-01. Hours come from each venue's own site.

The late-night museum circuit

Cleveland Museum of Art. At 11150 East Boulevard in University Circle, the museum says general admission is always free. It is open Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 10 to 5 and Wednesday and Friday 10 to 9, closed Monday and on Thanksgiving Day. Visitors pass through metal detectors at the entrance. Provenance Cafe is open on Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 8 (Cleveland Museum of Art). A free museum that stays open until 9 pm is a good way to try a museum alone: come after work, spend an hour and leave. The museum guide has more tips.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. On the lakefront downtown. From September to June it is open daily 10 to 5, with Thursday open until 9 pm, and it is closed on Thanksgiving. The site suggests allowing two to three hours, most of it underground, and says the museum is cashless, so bring a card or phone (Rock Hall). The adult ticket is listed at $45. Because the best of it is in the exhibits, headphones on and your own pace work well here.

Great Lakes Science Center. At North Coast Harbor. In fall and winter it is open Tuesday and Wednesday 10 to 5, Thursday 10 to 8 and Friday to Sunday 10 to 5, closed Monday. It is also closed on 26 and 29 November and on 6 and 13 December 2026 (Great Lakes Science Center). The closures include Cleveland Browns home-game days, so check the dates before you plan.

A library worth an afternoon

Cleveland Public Library, Main Library. The downtown campus fills the city block of Superior Avenue between East 3rd and East 6th Street. It is open Monday to Saturday, 10 to 6, closed Sunday. The campus includes the 1925 Main Library, the Louis Stokes Wing, the Eastman Reading Garden between the buildings and Brett Hall, an exhibit space. The library offers a free tour, Monday to Friday 10 to 5:30, subject to staff availability, and a smaller group can take a self-guided tour with help. The tour takes in the tenth floor of the Louis Stokes Wing for city views (Cleveland Public Library). The library lists events, so check the programme before your visit.

Food and film

West Side Market. At 1979 West 25th Street in Ohio City, the market opened in 1912 and describes itself as the largest and oldest public market in Cleveland. Its site banner lists regular hours of Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8 to 5, Saturday 8 to 5 and Sunday 10 to 4 (West Side Market). Go on a Saturday if you like crowds and on a weekday if you do not.

Cleveland Cinematheque. At 11610 Euclid Avenue, a short walk from the art museum, it describes itself as the city's year-round alternative film theatre. Its series include Cleveland Premieres, Film Classics in 35mm, New 4K Restorations and International Cinema (Cleveland Cinematheque). Read going to the cinema alone if you have not done it before.

The Cleveland Orchestra. The orchestra's calendar lists Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake in Mandel Concert Hall from 27 to 29 November (The Cleveland Orchestra). Check the site for tickets and the seating plan.

A garden for winter

Cleveland Botanical Garden. In University Circle, with glasshouses. The garden posts a closure notice for the days it needs to install its holiday show, Tropical Holiday, and tickets for the show are on sale (Cleveland Botanical Garden). Its Tropical Holiday kids classes are listed from 28 November (Tropical Holiday). Check the closure notice before choosing a garden day.

Getting around

RTA lists an all-day pass at $5.00, with unlimited rides until 3 a.m. the next day. It can be bought on vehicles, at ticket machines and at retail agents (RTA fares). The RTA site also posts service alerts, so check them before you travel.

Three first outings

  1. Easy: the Cleveland Museum of Art on a Friday evening, with a coffee at Provenance Cafe.
  2. Medium: a free tour of the Main Library on a weekday, then West Side Market.
  3. Bolder: a Thursday evening at the Rock Hall, then a film at the Cinematheque another night.
