This guide is about Columbus, Ohio, the state capital. Much of what suits one person here lines up along North High Street: the Short North Gallery Hop, the Gateway Film Center and the Wexner Center for the Arts, with an art museum and a market close by. Here is how to use that stretch alone.

A street that does the planning for you
If you are not sure where to start, start on High Street. Cultural venues sit along it, so you can do one thing, see how it went and either carry on or go home, all without a plan for the whole day.
Short North Gallery Hop. The Short North Arts District describes Gallery Hop as a free, open-streets arts evening held on the first Saturday of every month from 4 to 8 pm on High Street. It has run since 1984, with galleries opening new exhibitions and musicians and performers working the sidewalks (Short North Gallery Hop). Because the whole street is the event, nobody is waiting for you to explain why you came alone.
Gateway Film Center. At 1550 North High Street, this cinema posts its showtimes, festival programmes and curated series on its own site (Gateway Film Center). A film is one of the easiest solo plans because everyone faces the screen. See going to the cinema alone for tips.
Wexner Center for the Arts. On the Ohio State campus at 1871 North High Street, the galleries are open Sunday 10 to 4, Tuesday and Wednesday 9:30 to 5, Thursday and Friday 9:30 to 7, and Saturday 10 to 5, and are closed on Monday. The Wex cafe is open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm, closed on weekends (Wexner Center). Late opening on Thursday and Friday means you can come after work.
Thursday nights at the museum
Columbus Museum of Art. At 480 East Broad Street, the museum is open Tuesday and Wednesday 10 to 5, Thursday 10 to 9, and Friday to Sunday 10 to 5, closed Monday. Its ticket table lists free admission on Thursdays from 5 to 9 pm and a $5 Sunday rate. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day. The museum also says that weekday afternoons tend to be the least busy and that weekends are calmest from 10 am to noon (Columbus Museum of Art). On Friday and Saturday evenings, the Bar Room at CMA at The Pizzuti stays open until 10 pm.
This is the gentlest option for a first outing: you can leave after twenty minutes and lose nothing on the ticket.
Where to sit down
Columbus Metropolitan Library, Main Library. Columbus Metropolitan Library describes the Main Library as a 1907 Carnegie-funded Beaux-Arts building with an 800-seat reading room, and it runs a free author series called Authors at the Library (Columbus Metropolitan Library). Opening hours are on the library's site, so check them before you go.
North Market Downtown. At 59 Spruce Street, the market's site lists Sunday and Monday 10 to 5 and Tuesday to Saturday 9 to 7, and says it is closed on Thanksgiving Day (North Market). A food hall suits one person because you order at a stall, carry your food to a shared table and nobody expects a party of four. For more, see how to eat alone in public.
German Village Visitors Center. Staffed by volunteers who know the neighbourhood, it sits at 588 South Third Street and is open weekdays 9 to 4 and Saturdays 10 to 2, with Sunday hours of noon to 3 from April to November (German Village Society). Starting here gives you a human to ask and a map to hold.
Green space, in November
Franklin Park Conservatory. The site says it is open seven days a week all year, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with regular hours of 10 to 5, though special events can change them. The Garden Cafe is open daily from 11 to 4 and does not need admission. On the first Sunday of each month, residents of Franklin County and the City of Columbus can enter free with valid ID (Franklin Park Conservatory).
Scioto Audubon Metro Park. At 400 West Whittier Street, Metro Parks lists hours of 6:30 am to 8 pm from 1 October to 31 March. The Scioto Greenway Trail is paved and runs along the Scioto River, two miles inside the park (Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks). Winter closing is earlier than summer, so plan to be out before dark.
Getting around
COTA lists a two-hour pass at $2.00 and a day pass at $4.50, valid until midnight. Fare capping stops you paying more than $4.50 in a day, and the Transit app and COTA Smartcard are listed as payment options (COTA fares).
Three first outings
- Easy: coffee at the Wex cafe on a weekday morning, then walk the galleries.
- Medium: Columbus Museum of Art on a Thursday after 5 pm, then dinner at North Market.
- Bolder: Gallery Hop on the first Saturday of the month. Arrive at 4, pick one gallery that looks interesting and stay until 8 if it is going well.
