Things to Do Alone in Burlington

Burlington, Vermont, is a small lakeside college city, and in November it settles into winter mode: the summer farmers market is over, some museums close for the season, and the indoor options take over. This guide focuses on what stays open, starting with a free university art museum and city-run galleries.

Art that costs nothing, and art you can make

Fleming Museum of Art (61 Colchester Avenue). The museum at the University of Vermont lists free admission for all, and suggests a donation if you are able. It is open September 8, 2026 to May 22, 2027, generally following the academic calendar: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday noon to 4 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. It lists planned closures from November 23 to 28 (UVM fall recess) and from December 13, 2026 to February 1, 2027 (Fleming Museum: visit). Wednesday evening is the best slot to go alone, since you can still visit after work or class.

BCA Center (135 Church Street). Burlington City Arts describes the center as a three-level, year-round exhibition space. Three exhibitions, Taken to Heart by Kathleen Schneider, Dark Botanica and Forms of Connection by Trystan Bates, are on view through January 23, 2027. Hours are Wednesday and Saturday noon to 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday noon to 5 p.m. (BCA: exhibitions, BCA: about).

BCA Studios (405 Pine Street). Adult classes run as one-day workshops and as four- to eight-week sessions, with beginner-friendly and mixed-level options in the day, evening and weekends, in small groups (BCA: classes). A one-day workshop is the lowest-commitment way to try something alone.

Winter market and Church Street

Burlington Winter Farmers Market. For 2026-27 the market meets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Burlington Beer Co., 180 Flynn Avenue, on selected Saturdays through the winter: December 5 and 19, January 16 and 30, February 13 and 27, March 13 and 27, and April 3 and 17. It lists around forty vendors with produce, crafts and prepared foods (Burlington Farmers Market: winter market). The summer market at 345 Pine Street runs only from Mother's Day weekend to the end of October (Burlington Farmers Market: location).

Church Street Marketplace. The pedestrian shopping street offers a self-guided Historic Tour covering the buildings and characters of the area, and two hours of free parking in the Downtown Garage via ParkMobile (Church Street Marketplace: historic tours, Church Street Marketplace). A walk with a theme gives you a reason to stop and look.

Outdoors and a library card

Intervale Center trails (180 Intervale Road). The non-profit farm centre invites visitors to stop at its information kiosk to orient themselves for hiking, skiing or bike riding in the Intervale, and reminds visitors to lock up their valuables (Intervale Center: trails).

Fletcher Free Library. The main library lists museum and event passes among its services (Fletcher Free Library). Ask at the desk which passes it offers.

Evenings and a day trip

Vermont Comedy Club (101 Main Street). At the corner of Main and Pine in downtown Burlington. The site lists shows, a cafe and classes (Vermont Comedy Club: location). A comedy show is a good solo evening because the whole room faces the stage.

Shelburne Museum Winter Lights (day trip to Shelburne). Outside the city, the museum site says it is temporarily closed and that Winter Lights opens November 27. Winter Lights is described as installations across the museum grounds, including the 220-foot steamboat Ticonderoga and the model train village in the Diamond Barn. Walk-through tickets are timed: $20 for adults bought online in advance, $25 at the door (Shelburne Museum: Winter Lights, Shelburne Museum). Check dates and how to get there before you plan it.

Lake Champlain in November

The lake shapes the city, but many lake attractions slow down for winter. The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes says its exhibits are closed for the season (Lake Champlain Maritime Museum). In winter, the Intervale trails and the Church Street walk are the easier lake-city outdoors.

Getting around

Green Mountain Transit serves the region; its fares page lists a fare chart, discount fares, a Ride Ready by GMT app and a smart card (Green Mountain Transit: fares).

A quiet-season rhythm

Because the Fleming closes from November 23 to 28 and again from December 13, the museum is best seen in the first three weeks of November or after it reopens on February 1. The BCA Center's three shows run to January 23, so they cover the gap. The winter market meets every other Saturday rather than weekly, so treat it as an event to plan around rather than a habit you can drop into.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: a Wednesday evening at the Fleming. Free entry, open until 7 p.m., outside the closure dates.
  2. Middle: a Saturday at the winter market. Plan around the market's listed dates and ask a vendor about what they sell.
  3. Bold: a night at the comedy club. Book one seat and sit where the room puts you.
