Things to Do Alone in Indianapolis

Indianapolis suits a solo visitor who likes a plan, because its best indoor rooms keep different weekly schedules. A museum can be closed on a Monday or a Tuesday and open on the other, so the way to do the city alone in November is to read the closing days first and build a rota from them. This guide does that for five museums, a monument, a library and a concert hall.

Last checked 2026-11-01.

The museum rota: who is open when

The table uses each museum's own published hours and the adult price listed on its site (the Eiteljorg visit page lists no price in the text checked; Newfields is covered below).

MuseumOpenHoursAdult price
Eiteljorg MuseumMonday to SundayMon to Sat 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sun noon to 5 p.m.–
Kurt Vonnegut Museum and LibraryEvery day except TuesdayMon, Wed to Sat 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sun noon to 5 p.m.$12
Indiana Historical SocietyTuesday to Saturday10 a.m. to 5 p.m.$15
Indiana State MuseumWednesday to Sunday10 a.m. to 5 p.m.$23

So a Monday works for the Eiteljorg and Vonnegut, a Tuesday for the Eiteljorg and the Historical Society, and a Wednesday to Saturday for all four. Sunday is the day to skip the Historical Society (Eiteljorg: hours; Vonnegut: plan your visit; Historical Society: visit; State Museum: hours and admission; Newfields: tickets).

Four museums, one by one

Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library. At 543 Indiana Avenue, it marks its 15th anniversary in 2026. Guided tours are listed at noon, which is a simple way to arrive alone and have someone tell you where to look. Senior, educator and military tickets are $10 and students pay $8 (KVML, KVML home).

Indiana Historical Society. The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center is at 450 West Ohio Street, along the Central Canal downtown. The Indiana Experience admission is $15 for adults, $14 for seniors 60 and over and $5 for youth aged 5 to 17, and online tickets save $2 for adults and seniors. A free parking lot is on New York Street, and there is a cafe, the Stardust Terrace Cafe, inside (IHS).

Indiana State Museum. At 650 West Washington Street, open Wednesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adults pay $23, seniors $21, youth $17 and college students with ID $5. A $4 parking validation is included with the purchase of an admission ticket, according to the museum's page (Indiana State Museum).

Eiteljorg Museum. At 500 West Washington Street in White River State Park, next to the Indiana State Museum, open six days from 10 a.m. and Sundays from noon. Its events page lists Winter Markets at Jingle Rails on November 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and extended Jingle Rails hours on December 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and it regularly lists artist-in-residence open studios (Eiteljorg). An open studio is a gentle format when you do not want to make conversation: you can watch for as long as you like.

Newfields on a Thursday

Newfields, at 4000 Michigan Road, combines the Indianapolis Museum of Art and its gardens. General admission lists $23 for adults, $20 for seniors, $15 for youth 6 to 17, and free for children 5 and under, with a $5 Access Pass. On First Thursdays, the site says, admission is flexible and you choose how much to pay, including $0, and the day adds live music and open studio hours. The site lists the 2026 dates through Thursday, December 3 (Newfields). The home page shows the exhibition Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys and a Winterlights listing; check the site for Winterlights dates and ticket rules before you plan around it (Newfields home).

A pay-what-you-choose day is a good test of going alone for the first time, because there is no ticket price to feel bad about if you leave after an hour.

Climb the Monument

The Soldiers & Sailors Monument stands on Monument Circle. Its observation deck has a 360-degree view of the skyline from 275 feet up. You can climb 331 steps, or ride an elevator for about 90 percent of the distance and climb the last 31 steps. Check the foundation's page for current visiting hours before you go. The Indiana War Memorial museum is part of the same group of memorials, which the Indiana War Memorials Foundation describes as a National Historic Landmark District (Soldiers & Sailors Monument, Indiana War Memorials Foundation).

A reading room and a concert seat

Central Library. Indianapolis Public Library's Central Library has an original 1917 building by Paul Cret, built of Indiana limestone in the Greek Doric style, and a six-story glass-and-steel addition by Evans Woollen that opened in 2007 (IndyPL: Central Library). It is a free place to sit with a book in November, and the building is worth a look in its own right.

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The ISO plays at Hilbert Circle Theatre on Monument Circle. Its calendar lists the AES Indiana Yuletide Celebration there from December 4 to 23 and Stravinsky's Petrushka on January 8 and 9 (ISO). One seat is easy to buy and nobody checks whether you came with anyone.

Moving around, and what is closed

IndyGo lists a 2 Hour Unlimited fare of $2.75, and you can pay with cash or scan a MyKey+ card or app at the front of the bus. Fare capping ($6.00 a day at full fare) is a MyKey+ feature. Children aged 5 and under ride free with a fare-paying rider (IndyGo: fares and passes, IndyGo: how to ride).

The Indianapolis City Market closed to the public on March 1, 2024 for redevelopment and has no reopening date on its page, so it is not a lunch option (City Market).

First solo outings

  1. Easy: First Thursday at Newfields on December 3. Pay what you like, walk one gallery slowly and leave when you are done.
  2. Middle: a noon tour at the Vonnegut museum. Go on a Monday or Wednesday to Saturday and join the guided tour, then read in the Central Library.
  3. Bold: the monument climb and a concert. Take the 331 steps up Monument Circle in the day and book a single seat for the Yuletide Celebration in December.
