Things to Do Alone in Knoxville

Knoxville is a good first solo city because so much of it is free: the Knoxville Museum of Art and the McClung Museum charge no admission, the East Tennessee History Center is free until February 2027, and a live radio show plays at noon most days. Add a market square, a gallery night and trails inside the city limits.

All hours below were checked on 2026-11-01 against the page linked in each entry.

Free rooms

Knoxville Museum of Art. In World's Fair Park, admission is free. Hours: Monday closed, Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. It also closes on University of Tennessee home football games and on listed holidays including Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (Plan your visit).

McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture. Admission and parking are both free. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on game days when the Vols play at Neyland Stadium (McClung Museum).

East Tennessee History Center. At 601 S. Gay Street. Free museum admission runs from 1 June 2026 to 14 February 2027. Listed hours: Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. (Plan your visit). Visit Knoxville groups it with the other downtown anchors among its museums (Museums and galleries).

Music at noon

WDVX Blue Plate Special. A live-performance radio show held at noon Monday to Thursday and on Saturday at Visit Knoxville, and on Fridays at Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria. WDVX says it is always free to join in (Blue Plate Special). Visit Knoxville places it at the Downtown Visitors Center, on Gay Street (Free things to do). A free show where people sit in rows is one of the easiest ways to be alone in company.

Downtown streets

Market Square. Visit Knoxville calls Market Square one of the city's most popular places since the 1860s, with outdoor concerts and movies, restaurants, and Krutch Park next door (Market Square). The Market Square Farmers' Market is a producer-only open-air market, Wednesdays May to November 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays May to November 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturdays in December 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Farmers markets). For eating alone, a market counter helps; see how to eat alone in public.

Old City. Around Central and Jackson Avenues, with galleries, coffee shops and restaurants in historic buildings; the page lists coffee shops such as Awaken Coffee and Old City Java (Old City).

First Friday. On the first Friday of every month, year-round, galleries and venues across the city host artists and live music. Downtown anchors on Gay Street include The Art Market, The Emporium and the Visitors Center (First Friday). A gallery evening gives you a reason to wander and no one expects you to have company.

Trails inside the city

Knox Urban Wilderness. Visit Knoxville describes it as a 1,000-acre stretch with more than 50 miles of hiking and biking trails connecting parks and Civil War sites (Market Square page). More on the Urban Wilderness.

Ijams Nature Center. The visitor center sells trail maps and is open Sunday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is $5 per vehicle per day (Ijams visitor center).

Greenways. Visit Knoxville lists about 67 miles of paved, ADA-accessible greenways (Trails and greenways).

Getting around

KAT lists a $1 one-ride fare and a $2 one-day pass, bought as a mobile ticket (KAT fares).

Making the most of a free day

Because three museums charge no admission, you can treat each one as a short visit instead of an all-day commitment. Check the football calendar before you plan a Saturday, because two of them close on home game days. The East Tennessee History Center lists parking help too: city garages offer free parking when entering after 6 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends (Plan your visit). Visit Knoxville adds that the Maker City directory lists local craftspeople and makers, including glassblowers, if you want a workshop-style stop later in your trip (The Maker City).

First solo outings

  1. Easy. A free morning at the Knoxville Museum of Art, Tuesday to Saturday.
  2. Medium. Noon at the WDVX Blue Plate Special, then the farmers market on Market Square on a Wednesday or Saturday.
  3. Bold. A First Friday gallery walk, or a morning at Ijams with a trail map.
