Kansas City, Missouri, is easy to try on your own in November because the main costs are low. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is free every day, the KC Streetcar is free to ride, and two art museums stay open late midweek. Here is a plan built around those.
Last checked 2026-11-01. Hours come from each venue's own site.
The art route: free, and late on Thursday
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The museum says admission is free every day, for everyone. You need to check in before entering the galleries, either online in advance or at a kiosk at the entrances. Hours are Monday 10 am to 5 pm, Thursday and Friday 10 am to 9 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 5 pm, and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park outside is free and open from sunrise to sundown (Nelson-Atkins visit page).
Eating alone fits in too. Rozzelle Court Restaurant serves lunch from 11 am to 2 pm, with coffee and dessert from 2 to 4 pm, and Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters is on level one of the Bloch Building. On Thursday and Friday nights the museum lists Sips & Snacks from 5 to 8 pm in the Bloch Lobby. For general tips, see how to visit a museum alone.
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Its hours are Wednesday 10 am to 4 pm, Thursday 10 am to 9 pm, and Friday to Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, closed Monday and Tuesday. The museum lists Edra Soto: the place of dwelling on view until 6 March 2027 (Kemper). Both the Kemper and the Nelson-Atkins stay open until 9 pm on Thursday.
Rooms for a winter afternoon
Central Library. At 14 West 10th Street, hours are Sunday 1 to 5 pm, Monday to Wednesday 9 am to 7 pm and Thursday to Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. The library runs free movies in the Durwood Film Vault, an original bank vault turned into a 28-seat cinema, with screenings listed daily at 2 pm (Kansas City Public Library). A 28-seat room is about as low-pressure as a cinema gets.
American Jazz Museum. In the 18th & Vine Jazz District, it is open Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm, and it is closed on Mondays from 14 September 2026 to 31 May 2027. The museum lists adult admission at $15 and notes ongoing construction (American Jazz Museum).
National WWI Museum and Memorial. From Labor Day to Memorial Day it is open Wednesday to Monday 10 am to 5 pm and closed Tuesdays (National WWI Museum). Ticket prices are listed on its site.
Kansas City Repertory Theatre. It lists A Christmas Carol 2026 from 21 November to 24 December 2026 (KCRep). One seat for a play is easy to book and everyone faces the stage.
Market weekend
City Market's farmers market runs Saturdays and Sundays, 9 am to 3 pm, in November and December (City Market). The River Market Community Association describes it as the largest farmers market in the area (River Market). Buy something warm, eat it standing, and leave when you like.
Getting around
The KC Streetcar says it is free to ride. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 5 am to midnight and Friday and Saturday 5 am to 1 am, with cars every 10 to 15 minutes at peak times and every 12 to 18 minutes off peak (KC Streetcar, hours). The River Market site lists the streetcar under Getting Here.
Planning a solo week around the closing days
Several Kansas City venues close on Tuesdays, which makes the midweek schedule worth a minute of planning. The Nelson-Atkins is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, the Kemper is closed Monday and Tuesday, the WWI Museum is closed Tuesday and the Jazz Museum is closed Monday. That leaves Thursday as the one day when the Nelson-Atkins and the Kemper are both open late, and Saturday or Sunday as the day when the market, the museums and the streetcar all line up. A free museum and a free tram also take the pressure off: if a visit does not suit you, you can leave and try the next stop without feeling you wasted a ticket.
Three first outings
- Easy: an afternoon at the Nelson-Atkins, then coffee at Thou Mayest.
- Medium: a free 2 pm film in the Central Library's film vault, then a streetcar ride with nowhere to be.
- Bolder: a Thursday evening that runs the Kemper and the Nelson-Atkins back to back, or a solo ticket for A Christmas Carol at KC Rep.
