Things to Do Alone in Stuttgart

Stuttgart sits in a basin, and the easiest way to do it alone is to use the slope. Ride up on the city's rack railway or funicular, walk down one of its hundreds of open-air staircases, and finish in the market hall at the bottom.

Ride up: the Zacke and the Seilbahn

The Zacke has climbed from Marienplatz to Degerloch since 1884, on gradients of up to 17.8 percent, with views over the city. The tourist board says it is the only rack railway in Germany that mainly serves everyday commuter traffic (Stuttgart Tourist). The operator SSB gives the route from the main station: Stadtbahn U14 towards Heslach to Marienplatz. For the return from Degerloch, take the U5, U6 or U12 towards the city (SSB, Zahnradbahn).

The Seilbahn, line 20, is a funicular from Südheimer Platz in Heslach to the Waldfriedhof. SSB says it takes four minutes to go from the city bustle to quiet forest, and it has run since 1929 with two wooden cars (SSB, Seilbahn).

Both railways meet on the Heslacher Blaustrümpflerweg, which SSB describes as a circular walk using the Zacke and the Seilbahn. A second route, the Joseflesweg, links Heslach and Sonnenberg (SSB, hiking with SSB). A ride, a loop and a coffee fill an afternoon, and nobody needs company for it.

Walk down: the Stäffele

The city counts more than 400 open-air staircases, called Stäffele in Swabian. They were built to reach the vineyards on the steep slopes, which gradually gave way to housing (City of Stuttgart). The tourist board puts the number at 400 to 600 and says no one knows exactly (Stuttgart Tourist).

A simple solo method: ride the Zacke up, then pick any stairway that points downhill and keep going until you reach a stop. Stairs are the one place where nobody expects conversation.

Look out: the TV tower and the zoo

The SWR Fernsehturm in Degerloch is open daily 10 to 22, closed on 24 December. The last access to the top is 30 minutes before closing, and an adult ticket is EUR 12.50 (concession EUR 8) (Fernsehturm). Degerloch is also the top stop of the Zacke.

The Wilhelma, the zoological-botanical garden, uses a winter rate from the October time change until the end of February, when it closes at 16:30. The Rosensteinpark entrance has been closed since 15 September 2025 until further notice, and the Pragstraße entrance is closed from 2 November 2026 to 28 February 2027 (Wilhelma opening times, fees).

The hall at the bottom: Markthalle

The Stuttgarter Markthalle, Dorotheenstraße 4, is open Monday to Friday 7:30 to 18:30 and Saturday 7 to 17. Its site lists a gastronomy section with table reservations by phone (Markthalle). The tourist board describes the hall's fruit, vegetable, fish and meat traders (Stuttgart Tourist).

Indoor days

Christmas market, 25 November to 23 December

The Stuttgart Christmas market runs from 25 November to 23 December 2026. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 11 to 21 and Friday and Saturday 11 to 22. On opening day, stalls open at 17:00 and the opening ceremony is at 18:00 in the courtyard of the Old Castle (Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt).

Getting around the basin

Most of this page runs on SSB lines: Stadtbahn U14 to Marienplatz, the Zacke, the Seilbahn and the stops listed for the Staatsgalerie. The Staatsgalerie is a partner of bwegtPlus, so a current bwtarif ticket, JugendticketBW or Deutschland-Ticket gets reduced admission to the collection and special exhibitions. If you cycle, the Zacke pushes a special bike wagon uphill for free, daily from 5:45 (Sundays from 7:00), and you load and unload your own bike (SSB, Zahnradbahn). Timetables are on the VVS site.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: the Seilbahn to the Waldfriedhof. It is a four-minute ride and a walk under trees.
  2. Medium: Wednesday at the Staatsgalerie. Free for the collection; stay for one room.
  3. Bolder: the Blaustrümpflerweg loop. Take the Zacke and the Seilbahn on one afternoon, then eat at the Markthalle.
