Frankfurt is a good city for one person with a plan, because the plan is mostly a single ticket. The Museumsufer on the Main puts dozens of museums on one two-day pass, two big museums stay open into the evening, and a market hall and apple-wine pubs make eating alone a local habit, not an awkward one. This page is about how to spend a couple of days well, in November, before the Christmas market opens on 23 November.

Plan the museums by ticket, not by museum
The Museumsufer is a stretch of museums along the Main, and the tourism offices sell a ticket that treats it as one thing. The 2026 MuseumsuferTicket is valid for 39 museums on two consecutive days: EUR 21 for a single person, EUR 12 concession, EUR 32 family. It is non-transferable and needs ID. It is sold at the Tourist Information Römer and at the museums (Museumsufer, ticket).
A ticket like this removes the pressure to stay somewhere you do not enjoy: the price is already paid, so you can leave. Pick two or three museums per day and stop when you are tired. The museum alone guide has more on pacing.
The late evenings
- Städel Museum, Schaumainkai 63. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday to Sunday 10 to 18, Thursday 10 to 21, closed Monday. Tickets are timed and booked online. The Städel Restaurant is closed for renovation (Städel, visit, tickets).
- Senckenberg Naturmuseum, Senckenberganlage 25. Monday to Friday 9 to 17 except Wednesday 9 to 20, Saturday, Sunday and holidays 9 to 18 (Senckenberg visitor page, German; Museumsufer listing). A natural history museum is easy alone: you look at things, not at people.
- DFF Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum, Schaumainkai 41. A museum Tuesday to Sunday 11 to 18 with a cinema of up to 131 seats in the same house (Museumsufer listing, DFF). See cinema alone.
The free Saturday
On the last Saturday of each month admission is free at many museums, among them the Archäologisches Museum, the Caricatura Museum, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, the Dommuseum and the Historisches Museum. In December it is also the last Saturday. It is a family programme with tours and workshops, so expect children (Satourday). The date this month is 28 November.
Eating local, alone
The tourism board lists the city's specialities. Apple wine (Ebbelwei) is drunk from a ribbed glass with a diamond pattern. You can ask for it plain, as "Sauergespritzter" with mineral water, or as "Süßgespritzter" with lemonade. In the traditional apple-wine pubs it comes in a "Bembel", a stoneware jug (Visit Frankfurt, specialities). The same page describes Frankfurt green sauce, served cold and made from seven herbs (chives, parsley, chervil, borage, sorrel, burnet and cress), usually with boiled eggs and jacket potatoes, and Handkäs' mit Musik, a cheese with under 1 percent fat.
For lunch, the Kleinmarkthalle at Hasengasse 5-7 is a market hall open Monday to Friday 8 to 18 and Saturday 8 to 16, closed Sunday and holidays. It names Frankfurter Würstchen, green sauce and apple wine among its popular specialities, and it stays open during its renovation (Kleinmarkthalle, HFM news). A market hall is a low-pressure way to eat alone, since nobody expects a table for two. For more, see how to eat alone while traveling.
Something warm and something high
- Palmengarten, Siesmayerstraße 63. From November to February it is open daily 9 to 16, and the show houses close one hour after. It is closed on 24 and 31 December. Regular adult admission is EUR 10 from 16 October 2026 to 7 February 2027 because of the special exhibition "Garden Utopias" (Palmengarten). Warm greenhouses suit a grey November afternoon.
- Main Tower viewing platform. In winter (clock change to the end of March) it is open Sunday to Thursday 10 to 19 and Friday and Saturday 10 to 21; in summer an hour or two later (10 to 21 and 10 to 23). Adult single ticket EUR 9, reduced EUR 6, and EUR 4 if weather restricts the view. The operator lists a 20 percent discount on the adult ticket with the Frankfurt Card (Main Tower). It is a view with no conversation required.
Christmas market: 23 November to 22 December
The Frankfurt Christmas market winds through the centre from the Roßmarkt and Hauptwache to Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, Paulsplatz, the Römerberg and the Mainkai. The tourism board counts over 230 stalls, open Monday to Saturday 10 to 21 and Sunday 11 to 21. The official opening is on 23 November on the Römerberg, and tower horns play from St Nicholas Church at 18:00 on that day and every Wednesday and Saturday after it. The board mentions the "Quetschemännchen", figures made of dried plums (Visit Frankfurt, Christmas market). The market is a single ribbon, so you cannot get lost.
Getting around
The Frankfurt Card, sold by the tourism board, includes public transport in Frankfurt, including the airport, as a 1-day or 2-day ticket. The "basic" version has no transport and suits people who already have a Deutschland-Ticket or a job ticket (Visit Frankfurt, Frankfurt Card). The DFF lists U-Bahn Schweizer Platz as its nearest stop.
First solo outings
- Easy: lunch at the Kleinmarkthalle. Go on a weekday before 18:00, order one local thing, and eat it standing.
- Medium: a Thursday at the Städel. Go late, stay to 21:00, and look at one room properly.
- Bolder: two days on the MuseumsuferTicket. Spend one day on museums and the evening in an apple-wine pub with a "Sauergespritzter".
