Hamburg is easiest alone when you let the water do the work. A harbour ferry runs on an ordinary public transport ticket, a Sunday fish market asks nothing of you but standing there, and two big museums stay open late on Thursday. One thing has changed: the Elbphilharmonie Plaza is no longer free.

Start on the water
Harbour ferry line 62
Line 62 is a HADAG harbour ferry that is part of the hvv network. It leaves from Landungsbruecken, Bruecke 3, and runs down the Elbe to Finkenwerder, stopping at the Fischmarkt, the Cruise Center Altona, the Dockland and the Museumshafen Oevelgoenne, where the Elbstrand is a place to walk and watch ships (hamburg.de, line 62). From Monday to Friday it leaves about every 15 minutes between 6:45 and 22:15. On Saturday it starts at 5:45, and on Sunday at 6:45, with a 15-minute rhythm to 22:15 and half-hourly boats until 23:45.
For a first solo outing this is hard to beat: no booking, no table, no talking. The Hamburg tourism board says a normal HVV ticket or the Hamburg CARD works on the seven harbour ferry lines (Hamburg Tourism). Check the fare and ticket options in the hvv shop. Get off at Oevelgoenne, walk along the beach, take the next boat on.
Alster boats
If you want commentary and a seat rather than a commuter ferry, ATG Alster-Touristik runs tours from the Jungfernstieg: a 50-minute Alsterrundfahrt from EUR 10, plus longer 2 and 3 hour tours from EUR 17.50 (Alster-Touristik). These are sightseeing trips, not part of the public ticket system, so buy a ticket on the tour page.
Early and loud: the Sunday fish market
The Fischmarkt on the Altona waterfront has run since 1703, opposite the Fischauktionshalle. It is a Sunday market: from 15 March to 14 November it runs 5:00 to 9:30, and from 15 November to 14 March 7:00 to 9:30 (hamburg.de). The city site describes market criers, baskets of fish and fruit, plants and souvenirs, and says you do not need to buy much to make the visit worthwhile. A fish roll is the obvious snack.
It works alone because it is a crowd that moves. Walk the length of it, eat standing up, leave when you like. From 15 November the start moves to 7:00, so the winter version is a gentler first try. Combine it with the line 62 ferry, which stops at the Fischmarkt.
Elbphilharmonie Plaza: now with a ticket
The Plaza is the public viewing platform of the Elbphilharmonie in the HafenCity, 37 metres up with a circular path around the outside. It is open daily 10:00 to 24:00. According to hamburg.de, a Plaza ticket costs EUR 5 from 5 October 2026, EUR 3 reduced (students, trainees and others with proof), and tickets are time-slotted, sold online up to two months ahead and on site (Elbphilharmonie, hamburg.de). Concert tickets include Plaza access from two hours before the event. Older guides say the Plaza is free; that is out of date.
Go alone in the evening and look at the harbour. Nobody on a viewing platform is expecting you to talk.
Late museums on Thursday
Two city-centre museums stay open late and are cheaper in the evening, which makes them good for a weeknight.
| Museum | Area | Hours | Cheaper or free |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hamburger Kunsthalle | Altstadt, Glockengiesserwall 5 | Tue-Sun 10-18, Thursday to 21 | Short evening visit 17-18 and Thu 20-21 EUR 9 (regular price EUR 18); free on the first Thursday of every month 18-21 |
| Museum fuer Kunst und Gewerbe (MK&G) | Steintorplatz, near the main station | Tue-Sun 10-18, Thursday to 21, Monday closed | Thursdays from 18:00 EUR 8 (regular EUR 14); free on the first Thursday of the month from 18:00 |
Sources: Kunsthalle opening hours and prices, MK&G. The Kunsthalle also lists guided tours and events on Thursdays from 18:00 that are included in admission. For how to pace a visit, see how to go to a museum alone.
The Deichtorhallen show "Hito Steyerl - Deine Mudda macht Show" runs in the Halle fuer aktuelle Kunst, Deichtorstrasse 1-2, from 30 October 2026 to 29 March 2027 (Deichtorhallen). Check hours and prices on the museum's site before you go.
Sit in the dark: planetarium and cinema
- Planetarium Hamburg, Stadtpark. Open Tuesday 9-19, Wednesday 9-18, Thursday and Friday 9-21, Saturday 11-22:30, Sunday 10-19, closed Monday. Its site lists the upcoming shows and their next dates, for example "We Are Stars 3D" in the Cosmos programme (Planetarium Hamburg). Everyone faces the same way, which is exactly why it suits a solo outing.
- Metropolis Kino, by the Gaensemarkt next to the Staatsoper. A repertory cinema with 281 seats in a listed hall and two to four screenings a day. Its site announces festivals such as the Unerhoert! music film festival (25-29 November 2026) (Metropolis Kino). See cinema alone for how to choose a seat.
Speicherstadt: a small museum and a big one
- Speicherstadtmuseum, Am Sandtorkai 36. A museum in an 1888 warehouse about how coffee, cocoa and tea were stored and sampled. From November to February it is open daily 10-17; the single ticket is EUR 6 (EUR 4.50 reduced), rising to EUR 6.50 from 1 January 2027 (Speicherstadtmuseum).
- Miniatur Wunderland. Open 365 days a year, always at least 9:30-18:00, with an adult ticket at EUR 22. The operator warns of long waits at weekends and in school holidays and publishes a waiting-time forecast (opening hours, admission). Choose a weekday if you dislike queues.
In summer: free water-light shows
From 1 May to 30 September the Wasserlichtkonzerte run daily on the Parksee in Planten un Blomen: music, light and water, free, no registration. They start at 22:00 from May to August and 21:00 in September (hamburg.de). They are not running in November, so this is one for a summer trip.
First solo outings
- Easy: the ferry. Ride line 62 from Landungsbruecken to Oevelgoenne, walk the Elbstrand, ride back. You need a ticket and a timetable, nothing else.
- Medium: a Thursday evening. On the first Thursday of the month, go to the Kunsthalle or the MK&G from 18:00 for free. Look at one room properly, then leave.
- Bolder: Sunday at the Fischmarkt. Be there when it opens, eat a fish roll standing up, and then ride the ferry from the Fischmarkt stop.
If you are also new to eating alone, how to eat alone in public covers the basics. For planning the trip, see first solo trip tips.
