Things to Do Alone in Nuremberg

Nuremberg works for one person because the old town packs a lot of small museums into a few streets, and the city sells them on one cheap add-on. Two underground tours put you in a small group of strangers where nobody expects you to talk, and the local lunch is three sausages in a bun. In November it is a museum-and-tour city; the Christkindlesmarkt opens on 27 November.

Buy one ticket, then wander the old town

The Nuremberg Municipal Museums charge EUR 7.50 for adults. For an extra EUR 4 the same ticket becomes a day ticket, and the other municipal houses are then free that day. That makes it easy to leave a house when you are done instead of feeling you must get your money's worth (Nuremberg Municipal Museums, admission).

Opening hours differ by house, so pick by weekday (hours):

HouseDays and hours
Albrecht Duerer's HouseTuesday to Sunday 10 to 18; Monday too during the Christmas Market in December
City Museum at Fembo HouseTuesday to Friday 10 to 17, weekends 10 to 18
Toy MuseumTuesday to Friday 10 to 17, weekends 10 to 18
Museum Tucher MansionMonday 10 to 15, Thursday 13 to 17, Sunday 10 to 17; closed other days

The Museum for Industrial Culture is closed until summer 2027. The day ticket does not cover the Medieval Dungeons, the Art Bunker or the Documentation Center.

Join a group where everyone is a stranger

Two guided tours run by the Unterwelten association put you in a small group, and tours are a format where arriving alone is the norm.

Book online for the day you want, and arrive a few minutes early. If you have never joined a tour alone, these are short enough to be an easy first one.

The history you do on your own audio

The Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds sits in the south-east of the city, away from the old town. It is open daily 10 to 18, and a media guide is listed among the visitor services, so you can move at your own speed (Documentation Center). Give it a quiet slot, not a rushed one, and check admission on the site before you go.

Art, trains and a future museum

For general advice, see going to a museum alone.

The castle in winter hours

The Kaiserburg is open daily 10 to 16 from October to March, with last entry about 60 minutes before closing. It is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December. The combined ticket for the Palas with the double chapel, the museum, the deep well and the Sinwell tower is EUR 10 (EUR 9 reduced). The Burggarten is closed from 2 November to 25 March (opening hours, prices, German). Go in the morning so the short daylight is not wasted.

Sit in the dark at the Filmhaus

The Filmhaus Nuernberg shows its programme in the cinema rooms of the Kuenstlerhaus. Its programme strands include silent films, Cine International, reprises and a children's cinema, and there is a Filmhauscafe (Filmhaus, German). Check the weekly overview for dates and times. A cinema is one of the easiest places to be alone; see cinema alone.

Eat the local way

The tourist board names two export hits: Lebkuchen and the Nuremberg sausage, eaten as "3 im Weggla", three small sausages in a sliced bun with mustard, or on a pewter plate (Nuremberg's specialties). The Bratwurstgloecklein in the old town is open Monday to Saturday 11 to 22, with the kitchen and grill until 21, and is closed on Sundays (Bratwurstgloecklein, German). Ordering a single plate is normal; for more, see eating alone.

Christkindlesmarkt: 27 November to 24 December

The market runs from 27 November to 24 December 2026, daily 10 to 21, with the opening ceremony on 27 November at 17:30. In 2027 it runs from 26 November (Christkindlesmarkt). During the market, some municipal houses open on Mondays in December; see the table above. For advice on markets, see Christmas market alone.

Getting around

Public transport is run by VAG. In 2026 a single adult ticket is EUR 3.90, or EUR 3.65 bought online, valid 90 minutes; a short-distance ticket is EUR 2.10 (VAG tickets). The Nuremberg Card lasts 48 hours and combines free public transport in Nuremberg, Fuerth and Stein with free entry to included sights such as Duerer's House, the DB Museum, the Imperial Castle and the Documentation Center (Nuremberg Card). It pays off only if you plan several of those in two days. Most of the old town is walkable.

First solo outings

  1. Easy: one museum, one sausage. Pick Duerer's House or the Toy Museum, then eat 3 im Weggla (Bratwurstgloecklein is closed Sunday).
  2. Medium: a Thursday at the Neues Museum, open until 20, then the Filmhaus.
  3. Bold: a tour with strangers. Book the Art Bunker at 14:00 and go in without a plan for who you will talk to.
