Düsseldorf is a city where strangers share a table without discussion. The tourism board says Rhinelanders prefer to stand at a table where other people already are, which makes the Altstadt, with around 260 pubs, restaurants and bars, an easy first night out alone. Around that sit a Japanese quarter full of counters, a daily food market, and a calendar of cheap art evenings. The Christmas market runs until 30 December.

Stand where the others stand
The tourism board describes a Düsseldorf brewery as primarily a place where people come together. In the Altstadt, an evening means going from one pub to the next, eating a snack in between and talking to many people. It also names the house beers: Schumacher, Uerige, Brauerei Kürzer, Füchschen, Schlüssel and Gulasch Alt, six Altbier types brewed in the city (Visit Düsseldorf, breweries). Cologne has its own beer ritual, described in Cologne; here the unwritten rule is the table: pick one with people already at it.
- Uerige, Berger Straße 1: open Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 24:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 23:00, closed on 25 December, and until 14:00 on 24 and 31 December. The tourism board's story lists hearty house cooking with it, such as Spanferkel and Krüstchen-Gulasch, and says locals meet there after shopping at Carlsplatz (Uerige, Visit Düsseldorf story).
- Füchschen, on Ratinger Straße: brewed here since 1848 (Füchschen).
If you would rather arrive with a group, the tourism board lists the Altbeer-Safari guided tour, starting at 15:30 and listed at EUR 36.50. It describes it as a way to become an "Altbeer expert" in two hours (Altstadt). The same page lists a night-watchman tour at 20:00 from EUR 22. For the basics of eating alone, see how to eat alone in public.
Counters in Little Tokyo
Düsseldorf has the third-largest Japanese community in Europe, and the tourism board puts about 15,000 Japanese residents in and around the city. Little Tokyo runs along Immermannstraße and side streets between the main station and the centre, with ramen shops, izakaya bars, hotels, supermarkets and bookshops. Its list of cafés includes Immcho Café at Immermannstraße 2 and Aiko's Mochi at Immermannstraße 30. The board also offers a downloadable Little Tokyo map, and notes Japanese gardens in the Nordpark and at the EKŌ-Haus in Niederkassel (Little Tokyo).
The NRW-Forum's exhibition ASIA POP, running 17 September 2026 to 23 May 2027, covers East Asian pop culture from Hello Kitty to Studio Ghibli and K-pop, and fits the same afternoon (NRW-Forum).
Fresh from the stall
Carlsplatz, the square south of the Altstadt, sells fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, bread and cheese, plus teas, spirits and mustard that travel well. In the passages you can find Düsseldorf home cooking and Italian, Indian, French and Persian food. The market is open Monday to Saturday (Carlsplatz).
Art after dark, and cheap
Three institutions, three different cheap windows. They are best planned by weekday.

- Filmmuseum Düsseldorf is a museum and a cinema: the museum is open Wednesday 12:00 to 21:00 and Thursday to Sunday 12:00 to 18:00, closed Monday and Tuesday, entry EUR 5 (EUR 2.50 reduced). The Black Box cinema is EUR 7. Its homepage also announces film quizzes, in German (Filmmuseum, homepage).
South of the centre: Benrath palace
Schloss Benrath, built from 1756 to 1773 and about twelve kilometres from the old city gates, is a baroque pleasure palace with a 61-hectare park. The park is open to visitors free of charge all year, dogs must be on a lead, and the park is a protected habitat for ground-nesting birds (Visit Düsseldorf, Benrath, Schloss Benrath). The museums in the main building are open Monday and Tuesday 11:00 to 17:00, Friday 14:00 to 17:00 and Saturday and Sunday 11:00 to 18:00, and closed on 22 November. A walk in an enclosed park is a calm way to be alone with a view.
For other green space in the centre, the tourism board names the Hofgarten, the Nordpark with its Japanese garden and the Rhine meadows (green city).
Christmas market until 30 December
The Christmas market runs until Wednesday 30 December 2026. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 20:00 and Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 21:00; on Christmas Eve it is open 11:00 to 15:00 and on Boxing Day 14:00 to 21:00. It is closed on Christmas Day. The board lists a Ferris wheel at Burgplatz, 55 metres high, and an ice rink on the Kö (Visit Düsseldorf, Christmas). Come by day and a stand-and-eat stall is the simplest solo dinner there.
Getting around
The tourism board recommends public transport for the Christmas markets and suggests the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station as a central stop. Rheinbahn, the local operator, is introducing CALO: you tap a bank card, smartphone or prepaid credit card on a reader at the door, and the default is tariff zone A (Düsseldorf). Readers are being installed in buses, and in the meantime the operator asks you to use the ticket validator (Rheinbahn, CALO).
First solo outings
- Easy: a Thursday evening at Kunstpalast. On the first Thursday of the month, go at 18:00 and see the collection for free.
- Medium: ramen and a stroll through Little Tokyo. Pick a counter on Immermannstraße and sit down.
- Bolder: a standing table in the Altstadt. Go to Uerige, take a spot at a table where people are already gathered, and stay for one glass.
Other cities: things to do alone in cities, things to do alone in a new city. Also in Germany: Cologne, Frankfurt and Hamburg.
